MONROE - The semi-pro football team that will kick off its inaugural season next May now has a name. Co-team owner Bobby McGinnis announced Thursday the team will be named the Green County Outlaws.
The community voted to name the team the Green County Outlaws at a brat sale July 5 at Piggly Wiggly. The other name that was a finalist for consideration was the Green County Grizzlies.
The team would be a sister team to the Madison Mad Dawgs, according to McGinnis, Monroe.
"I'm excited the community approved Green County Outlaws because of the (Fred) Blumer kidnapping in the Al Capone days," McGinnis said referencing the movie by Minhas Craft Brewery on the Blumer kidnapping and prohibition story. "There is some history with that name."
The Mad Dawgs play in the Northern Lights Football League, which includes teams in Brown County, Milwaukee and Janesville.
The owners are looking to land a playing field. McGinnis said he is working with Monroe and New Glarus school districts about the possibility of hosting games. Organizers are planning a semi-pro football meeting at 5 p.m. Sept. 6 at Leisure Lanes where they will have to form a separate board of directors to oversee the Green County team.
The goal is to have the program ready to go for the 2015 season. The 10-game season runs May through August.
The maximum roster is 52 players. The minimum age is 18. Those who have graduated from high school but are under 18 may play with parental approval.
