Redbirds, Warriors get wins

MINERAL POINT - The Darlington football team jumped back into the Southwest Wisconsin Activities League title hunt with a thrilling 35-27 win over Mineral Point Friday night.

Darlington (5-1, 3-1 SWAL) now trails Iowa-Grant (5-1, 4-0) by one game for the conference lead. Cuba City (3-3, 3-1) lost a heartbreaker to Iowa-Grant 21-20 to put the Redbirds in position to control its own destiny. Darlington hosts Iowa-Grant Friday, Oct. 16.

The Redbirds racked up 311 rushing yards and took an early lead on senior Aaron Stauffacher's 9-yard TD run in the first quarter.

Stauffacher rushed for 108 yards on 18 carries.

Darlington came back from a 13-7 deficit when junior Tucker Wiegel scored on a 5-yard run. Then, Darlinton's Wade Black, who was 5-for-5 on extra points, made the kick after the touchdown to give the Redbirds a 14-13 lead.

The Redbirds added to their lead when junior Alex Erickson returned a fumble 45 yards for a touchdown.

Darlington's Dan Hammer scored on an 11-yard run and Wiegel had a 47-yard TD run to help the Redbirds seal the win.

Erickson completed two of five passes for 22 yards. Trynton Schwartz had two receptions for 22 yards.

Black Hawk 55, Weston 0

WESTON - Black Hawk's one-two punch of Cody Foster and Grant Roper at running back wore down Weston as the Warriors rolled to a 55-0 non-conference win.

Foster rushed for 141 yards and three touchdowns and Roper ran for 166 yards and a touchdown.

"We have to win out to have any shot of slipping into the field," Black Hawk coach Cory Milz said of the playoffs.

Foster scored on 6- and 4-yard TD runs in the first quarter to help the Warriors jump out to a 14-0 lead.

Black Hawk (2-4, 1-4 Six Rivers East) exploded for 21 second-quarter points. Foster had a 24-yard TD run and Roper added a 10-yard TD run.

Black Hawk quarterback Michael Wolff threw a 20-yard TD pass to Christian Krahenbuhl. Wolff completed four of six passes for 77 yards and a touchdown. James Rufenacht led the Warriors with two receptions for 29 yards.

Shullsburg 21, Pecatonica-Argyle 7

SHULLSBURG - The Vikings rallied from a 13-point deficit, but couldn't knock off Shullsburg and lost 21-7.

Pecatonica-Argyle sophomore running back Jared Johnson rushed for 63 yards on 16 carries and scored on a 1-yard run in the second quarter to cut the Miners' lead to 13-7.

Pecatonica-Argyle (2-4, 2-3 Six Rivers East) was plagued by three turnovers. Pecatonica-Argyle senior Jeremy Meudt completed eight of 16 passes for 98 yards and had two interceptions.

Cambridge 12, Belleville-Albany 0

CAMBRIDGE - Turnovers haunted Belleville-Albany in a 12-0 loss to Cambridge.

Belleville-Albany (2-4, 0-2 Capitol South) had six total turnovers - fumbled five times and lost four and had two interceptions in the Capitol South showdown.

Belleville-Albany senior Nick Davis rushed for 109 yards on 14 carries to lead the Wildcats. Belleville-Albany quarterback Collin Adams was 3-of-12 passing for 12 yards and two interceptions.
