DARLINGTON - The Darlington cross country team dominated a dual meet against Pecatonica-Argyle Monday, giving the Redbirds a unique opportunity to challenge themselves and each other.
The Redbirds took the top 10 spots in both the boys race and the girls race. Darlington won the meet 15-50.
On the boys side, Tyson Miehe led the way with a time of 16 minutes, 55 seconds, followed by, Quinn Cullen (17:57), Thomas Schultz (18:05), Garth Garrison (18:37), Kyle Schulte (18:43), Patrick Roche (19:08), Andrew Kelly (19:21), Jaden Komprood (19:34), Sean Barbee (19:38), and Robert Martin (19:51).
Pecatonica's top finisher was Marcus Rubio, who finished 15th with a time of 21:28. Skylar Cragg came in 19th (22:26), and Login Swearingen finished 24th (23:25).
On the girls side, Darlington was led by Christa Wamsley who finished first with a time of 16:40. Cheyenne Wolfe came in second with a time of 16:54, followed by Tatum Evenstad (17:08), Claire Cullen (17:08), Harley Douglas (17:09), Rebecca Mathias (17:16), Johanna Meister (17:46), Darby Fitzsimons (17:55), Claire Scott (18:22), and Carly Reilly (18:44).
Pecatonica's top finisher was Samantha Erickson who finished 11th with a time of 18:49, followed by Emma Marion in 12th (19:35), Hannah James in 13th (19:46), Kensie Burreson in 15th (20:35), and Cora Demler in 16th (20:47).
Regardless of the lopsided win, Darlington coach Arnie Miehe was pleased with the results, especially considering the team just ran the Midwest Invite in Janesville on Saturday.
"I was pleased with how they ran tonight, because we came off that big meet in Janesville," Miehe said. "Things are coming together. I told them in the beginning of the season 'the whole season's a process.'"
The nature of the meet allowed the Redbirds, largely populating the front of the pack, to work on their running styles and to challenge themselves.
Coach Miehe was aware of the opportunity before the races started, and he expressed to his team, urging them to try different something different.
"I told them you gotta go in and do something you haven't done before," Miehe said. "It's a no-lose situation. This is a place to find that out."
Miehe noted that Martin, who finished 10th, and Schultz, who finished third, pushed themselves in the beginning of the race, trying to keep pace with team leader Tyson Miehe. He said he was proud to see that.
"He's gotta find out what he can do and what he can't do," Miehe said of Martin. "If you don't learn something tonight, it's kind of a wasted night."
On the girls side, coach Miehe said he continues to be impressed by Wamsley.
"Christa's had a really good year," he said.
Miehe also said he was anxious to see how the middle group of girls stuck together: a strategy he has expressed to them all year.
"[I saw] what I needed to see," Miehe said. "That middle group has got to hold together, and they did."
Up next for the Redbirds is the Platteville Invitational Saturday, where Monroe, New Glarus, Albany and Pecatonica will also compete.
