DARLINGTON — With approval from Lafayette county officials and race fans anxious to see some dirt fly, the green flagged dropped on the 2020 race season at Lafayette County Speedway June 5. Seventy cars took to the track to battle the track too tough to tame after a long-awaited winter and spring.

Eleven 4-cylinder cars opened the racing season, with last year’s track champion, Terry Edge Jr. (41J) of Fayette reaching victory lane. Second place went to Eric Beau (23) of Benton and third was Troy Pojok (49) of Apple River, Illinois.

The speedway crew announced at its banquet in December that the truck class would be dropped for the season, but another familiar class would be making its way back. The hobby stock class, which raced in the 2000s, was the second class to race Friday night. David Crimmins (16C) of Dubuque led the nine-car field to the checkered flag.

Scott Wetter (33) of Platteville took second place. Wetter’s father, Steve, raced and won many events several years ago.

Third place in hobby stock went to Matt Bennett (24) of Shullsburg.

In the IMCA Northern SportMod class, 24 cars raced and several wrecks occurred. Jason Roth (31) of Hazel Green took the checkered flag. Roth has had a successful start to the season, already winning at different tracks across Iowa. Scott Busch (71B) of Cuba City took second, with third place going to Ed Mills (41) of Freeport.

In the limited late models class, 13 cars battled back and forth. Jamie Pfeiffer (56) of Freeport, the 2019 track champion, led most of the laps. Second went to DJ Sweet (3D) from Georgetown and third was David Webster (44W).

To close out the night, the modifieds race saw several lead changes with battles for second and third place. The top five cars were swapped positions on nearly every corner, and in the end, it was Kenny Kostenbader (33K) of Freeport taking first. Second went to Brad Morning (555) of Freeport; who was in his first race back after a wreck ended his 2019 season in early August. Third place went to Derek Thompson (34T) of Monroe.

The next night of racing at Lafayette County Speedway will be at 6:45 p.m. on June 12.
