PSU’s season ends with 3OT loss

UNIVERSITY PARK — The Penn State University women’s hockey season ended with a 3-2 triple overtime loss on Thursday, March 9.

The No. 10-seeded Nittany Lions (27-9-2) drew the No. 8-seeded Quinnipiac Bobcats (30-9-0) in the first round of the NCAA tournament. After a quick goal in the first period for Quinnipiac, PSU responded with two goals in the second from Kiara Zanon and Olivia Wallin. In the closing minutes of the game, the Bobcats scored again to force overtime. It took three overtimes before Quinnipiac scored to win. It was the second-longest NCAA women’s hockey tournament game and third-longest single game in collegiate women’s hockey history.

On Saturday, March 4, the Lions were on the winning side of a 2-1 overtime game against Mercyhurst. The win captured the first CHA championship title in PSU history, which sent the Lions to their first NCAA tournament appearance. PSU received goals from Eleri MacKay and Julie Gough.

Penn State ended its season 27-9-2 overall and 14-1-1 in the CHA. Orangeville graduate Tessa Janecke finished her freshman season with 22 goals and a team-leading 25 assists for 47 points.
