BLANCHARDVILLE - The chilly conditions didn't stop the Pecatonica baseball team from pulling out a 5-4 non-conference win over Mineral Point Tuesday, April 1.
Pecatonica senior Chase Norton had a go-ahead RBI single in the fifth inning to give the Vikings a 3-2 lead. Pecatonica senior Tyler Hodgson also delivered a clutch two-out, two-run single in the sixth to give the Vikings a 5-2 lead.
"We had some timely hitting," Pecatonica coach Jim Strommen said. "It was a couple of insurance runs, which we needed.
"It was a good opening win to start the season. It was cold, but everyone is in the same boat."
Norton pitched three shutout innings to get the win. He struck out four and walked two. Senior Lucas McKeon pitched three innings and gave up two runs on three hits. He struck out three and walked four.
Dalton James went 3-for-3 to lead the Vikings. Pecatonica junior Drew Schliem went 2-for-4.
Schliem pitched one inning and gave up two runs on three hits. He struck out two and walked one.
Strommen was impressed with the pitching performance of Norton despite the cold conditions.
"Chase did a solid job in his three innings," he said. "At the high school level it's just throw strikes and get ahead in the count. He works quick and throws first pitch strikes. That is key, and it keeps the infielders on their toes."
