BELLEVILLE - Seniors Vanessa Narveson and Abbi Lahey each scored two goals to power the third-ranked Sugar River girls soccer team to a 10-0 win over Edgerton in a WIAA Division 3 regional semifinal on Thursday.
The game was stopped in the 84th minute of play due to the 10-goal mercy rule.
"It was a good night, because we got all 25 girls in and we were able to take control right away," Sugar River coach John Ziperski said. "I think we played at our level."
Top-seeded Sugar River (20-2-2) advances to play fifth-seeded Monroe (10-7-5) in a Division 3 regional championship game at 7 p.m. Saturday in Belleville. Sugar River defeated Monroe 3-1 on May 21.
Narveson scored her first goal on an assist from Taylor Legler at 5 minutes, 12 seconds. The Raiders scored six first-half goals.
Sophomore Kalin O'Rourke scored a goal in the 27th minute, and senior Brooke Larson scored a goal in the 28th minute to give the Raiders a 3-0 lead. Narveson scored her second goal on a pass from Esther Noriega at 29:51. About 4 minutes later, Sugar River's Brittany Kiefer scored a goal on an assist by Rachel Heittola to give the Raiders a 5-0 lead. Lahey scored her first goal at 41:24 to give the Raiders a 6-0 lead at the half.
Legler tacked on a goal on a pass from sophomore Aimee Sies to extend the Raiders' lead to 7-0 at 48:40. Sarah Marsh added a goal in the 62nd minute, and Lahey scored her second goal in the 82nd minute. Alexandra Nealis capped the scoring with a goal on an assist by Lahey at 83:50 to end the game.
Junior goalkeeper Madeline Bartels needed to make just one save.
