PRAIRIE DU CHIEN - The New Glarus-Monticello football team spent July 15 volunteering at Wisconsin Badger Camp.

Wisconsin Badger Camp is known to serve people with developmental disabilities by providing quality outdoor recreational experiences, and the service day was a way for players to gain experience in the football program's Character Development Program.

The team took a day out of their five summer contact days to use as a service day to help the camp. Players and coaches spent the first half of the day cleaning cabins, moving apartments and doing other projects.

The second half of the day was spent interacting with campers. Players and campers did arts and crafts together, played some two-hand touch football, played kickball, had water games and painted their faces.

Head Coach Desie Breadon chose Wisconsin Badger Camp for the service day for various reasons including his father, Dr. George Breadon, having a long-term involvement with Wisconsin Badger Camp. Coach Breadon also cites the Apostolate to the Handicapped as an inspiration to organize the service day.

"I learned from an early age from Monsignor Thomas Campion about how great and rewarding it was working with the handicapped," coach Breadon said. "The life lessons that the handicapped can teach us are immeasurable."
