NEW GLARUS - New Glarus golf coach Jonathan Goodness hopes competition every day in practice sparks the Glarner Knights back to the WIAA Division 3 sectional for the second straight year.
The Knights return four of their top five golfers from last year led by junior Matt Hach, who averaged a 41 in nine-hole matches last year, and senior Cole Runde, who averaged a 46 in nine-hole matches last year.
"I've seen him grow not only as a golfer but as a man," New Glarus coach Jonathan Goodness said of Runde. "His attitude is really what makes him successful. I can't ask for a better player as a captain to lead by example. He's the first one to practice and the last one to leave. He is pretty focused working to improve. Hopefully, other players will see that and put in the same amount of work."
The other returning golfers for the Knights are junior Jaren Martinson and Jacob Krantz.
"I think we should be able to repeat a lot of our success from last year," Goodness said. "Last year was the first time since I've been coaching that we made it to the sectional. Having that nucleus, especially that top three, is pretty strong and bodes well for this season."
Two other returners that give the Knights depth are senior Jonah Thompson and junior Jack Erickson. Freshman Ty Ready also is going to contribute right away.
"Jonah, Jacob, Ty and Jack have all been kind of pushing each other," Goodness said. "I expect them to be in competition all year for going to meets. It's great for a coach. It can only make our team better."
New Glarus finished fifth in the season-opening Capitol Conference meet Monday shooting a 180.
Lodi, which finished as the WIAA Division 2 state runner-up last year, is the favorite to win the Capitol Conference title.
"Based on the first meet, I think Lodi will be at or near the top," Goodness said. "Watertown Luther Prep has a really strong team and Lakeside Lutheran as well. I hope we are right in the mix for the conference. We have the ability to shoot well on any given night. I think when you play against teams like Lodi and Watertown Luther Prep, you can't be complacent. You have to be focused and work on the parts of your game that need improvement."
