NEW GLARUS - With New Glarus leading only by six points at one point in the fourth quarter, the Glarner Knights were able to put together 13 unanswered points in pulling away from the visiting Orioles and sealing a 59-40 victory.
"We had some steals that led to some key transition buckets," said Knights coach Travis Sysko. "Our transition game really helped us put the game away tonight."
Junior Colton Boley had a game-high 17 points for the Glarner Knights (3-5, 0-1). New Glarus also got solid outings from Martrell Dixon and Austin Schlueter, with 12 and 10 points respectively.
Sophomore Riley Ostby led the way for the Orioles, scoring a team-high 16 points. Alec Treuthardt added 11 points for Argyle. The Orioles travel to take Belmont on Thursday, Jan. 2.
Milwaukee Academy of Science 80, Monticello 70
CAMBRIDGE - In what ended up as a shootout, the Monticello Ponies were on the losing end in their game against the Milwaukee Academy of Science at the Cambridge Holiday Tournament, losing 80-70.
Monticello started off strong and entered halftime with the lead 35-28, but the second half was a different story as MAOS put together a combined 52-point second half.
The Ponies got solid contributions from seniors Lucas Marty and Brent Klitzke, who each had 20 and 15 points respectively, while fellow teammate Ben May added 19 points. Monticello wraps up its holiday tournament with a consolation game today.
Mineral Point 75, Black Hawk 44
MINERAL POINT - Hosting a holiday tournament can be beneficial to the home team, and Friday night's championship game in Mineral Point proved to be just that. To the dismay of the Black Hawk boys basketball team, ranked third in the state in Division 5, their efforts came up short in the tournament's crowning game as they lost to the host Pointers 75-44.
Mineral Point (9-0), ranked fourth in the state in Division 4, raced out to an early 13-point lead in the first half and continued to widen the gap as they outscored the Warriors 40-22 in the second half.
Heath Butler had 10 points for the Warriors, while his brother Seth added nine points.
Platteville 56, Juda 28
MINERAL POINT - In their holiday tournament game against the Platteville Hillmen, the Juda Panthers struggled throughout the game, losing 56-28.
"Offensive rebounds killed us tonight," said Juda coach James Pickett. "We just didn't box out as much as we needed to."
Cory Segner (11 points) and Matthew Schmitt (10 points) led the way for the Panthers.
Cuba City 56, Brodhead 31
CUBA CITY - Second half woes plagued the Brodhead boys basketball team in their matchup against tournament host Cuba City on Friday, losing 56-31.
The Cardinals could only muster 12 points in the second half, while Cuba City raced ahead with a 32-point half.
Ned Slocum scored 10 points for the Cardinals.
Albany 48, River Ridge 46
Iowa-Grant 43, Albany 37
RIVER RIDGE - The Albany Comets played two intense games at the River Ridge Holiday Tournament on Friday, experiencing the highs and lows of victory and defeat.
In their first game, the Comets came away with a narrow victory over River Ridge, winning 48-46.
Albany found themselves trailing by 10 points entering halftime but were able to pull away with the victory due to a solid second half performance in which they outscored River Ridge 28-16.
Tyler Dahl and Isaiah Shell paced the way for the Comets in the Game One, scoring 14 and 12 points respectively.
In their second outing, the Comets once again found themselves in a back-and-forth battle, this time against Iowa-Grant.
Leading by only a point heading into the half, Albany was unable to maintain its lead despite a solid fourth quarter. Iowa-Grant came away with the victory, 43-37.
Isaiah Shell led all scorers in Game Two with 20 points.
