MONROE - The Mike Muranyi Junior Golf Foundation's Junior golf tournament was a chance to showcase the Monroe Country Club and some of the top young golfers.
In the nine-hole tournament, Carter Sawdey, 12, finished first with a 56 just ahead of Jacob Ritschard, 12, who was second (65).
Tanner Thompson, 13, won the 12 and 13-year-old division with a 98. Hogan Edwards, 12, took second (102).
In the 14 and 15 division, Eric Timm won with an 87 and Matt Miller was second (96). Adam Werntz, 17, finished first in the 16 and 17 division shooting an 83. Connor Thompson, 17, was second (84).
The long drive place winners included Carter Sawdey (194), Thompson (265), Alec Heinz (283) and Cameron Elmer (293).
The Mike Muranyi Junior Golf Foundation has provided 25 Junior Golf memberships to the Monroe Country Club. Muranyi said he started the foundation to promote and foster golf in Monroe and Green County.
"The idea is to get some more kids playing who don't have the chance to play golf," Muranyi said during the foundation's kick-off last year. Muranyi served as the PGA golf professional at Monroe Country Club for 30 years and was in the golf business for 35 years.
Muranyi is a former Wisconsin State Open champion, player of the year, match play champion, Senior Wisconsin PGA champion and Wisconsin Senior Open champion. He also played in the Senior U.S. Open.
The foundation funds the entire $220 of a Junior Golf membership at Monroe Country Club for those who are enrolled in free and reduced lunches in the Monroe School District. The membership cost for thoe who were selected for discounted golf memberships is $100. The foundation funds the reminaing $120.
