DUBUQUE - The Monroe boys track team ran to a 12th-place finish at the University of Dubuque Classic Saturday in the season opener.
"We were a little short-handed," Monroe coach Scott Mosher said. "Some of the kids who just got done with basketball didn't run, and some of our kids had other plans. They (Iowa schools) have had a couple of weeks and have had a few meets under their belt. There were a lot of positives."
Dubuque Senior racked up 70 points to win the 18-team meet over Western Dubuque with 53 points. The Cheesemakers took 12th (17). Monroe senior Drake Ingold finished second in the 1,600-meter run with a time of 4 minutes, 40.28 seconds. It was about two seconds away from Madison West senior Aaron Letcher, who was the champion (4:38.70).
"He's in great shape," Mosher said of Ingold. "He could run for two hours. He's in tremendous shape."
Monroe junior Jordan Montgomery took sixth in the 55-meter race with a time of 6.77 seconds.
"That's very quick," Mosher said of Montgomery. "He's one of the fastest freshmen and sophomores we have ever had. It looks like he has taken the next step, and he's bigger, stronger and faster."
Monroe senior Jason Koller took fourth in the 400 (53.36). Montgomery teamed with freshman Trevor Rodebaugh, senior Jevon Gibson and senior Brayden Zettle to take 11th in the 800 relay (1:38.71). It was just 1.5 seconds away from qualifying for the finals.
"This meet was about the handoffs," Mosher said, noting the team hasn't had much time to work on them. "It's a good start for the relay. I think that relay can get down to 1:34 and be competitive with a lot of teams."
Monroe senior Tyson Welsch set a personal record to take ninth in the shot put with a throw of 44 feet, 3 inches. Junior Kyle Legler took ninth in the 3,200 (10:38.01).
Monroe sophomore Michael Kundert took sixth in the triple jump (30-3), and sophomore Shuan Sweeney was seventh (27-4).
The Cheesemakers had three in the top 20 in the triple jump. Zettle finished 12th with a jump of 19-3, and Montgomery took 16th (18-10). Rodebaugh finished 20th (18-6¼).
"That's a first good jump for a freshman," Mosher said of Rodebaugh. "He's a freshman who can probably go 20 feet."
