MILTON - With thunderstorms moving in, the Monroe girls tennis team pulled out a 4-2 win over Milton Thursday, Sept. 19.
Monroe (3-3, 2-3 Badger South) got a win from senior Allie Coplien at No. 1 singles. Coplien defeated Milton's Sydney Davis 6-2, 6-0. Monroe sophomore Katie Demianiuk at No. 4 singles defeated Justine Jacobson 6-2, 6-0.
"Allie Coplien and Katie Demianiuk played solid matches that were never in doubt from the start," Monroe coach Brad Saugstad said. "Allie worked her opponents backhand well, and Katie was just too consistent for her opponent."
The Cheesemakers' No. 1 doubles team of seniors Ellie Grossen and Chandra McGuire defeated Milton's Zyann Furseth and Maddie Erdman 4-6, 6-2, 10-6. At No. 2 doubles, the Cheesemakers' team of Paige Prien and Erin Gellings defeated Nianna Mendoza and Sydney Schoeberle 6-2, 7-6 (4). Prien and Gellings battled back from a 4-3 deficit in the second set by winning two games to take a 5-4 lead.
"Paige Prien and Erin Gellings are proving themselves to be better players away from Monroe," Saugstad said. "We have been working on closing out sets when we're up 5-4 and 6-5, but it's tough to simulate the pressure in practice. Paige and Erin couldn't quite get it done during the set, but they played a solid tiebreak to get the win for the team."
Grossen and McGuire's win at No. 1 doubles clinched the win for the Cheesemakers. They trailed 5-2 in the first set, but won eight of the next 11 games to force a third set tiebreaker. The Red Hawks took a 3-1 lead to start the tiebreaker. Grossen and McGuire went on a run to win nine of the next 12 points to seal the win.
"The good news with these two is that they've been in so many close sets and matches that they are confident they can win them," Saugstad said of Grossen and McGuire.
Monroe's Eva Priewe at No. 3 singles was up 6-4, 6-5 in the second set when the match was called due to lightning.
