MONROE - The Monroe High School softball team split a doubleheader with second-ranked Waupun on Friday at Twining Park.
Monroe defeated Waupun 10-4 in the first game. Monroe senior Natalie Dillon went 3-for-3 and after she hit a line drive off the hand of Waupun's No. 2 pitcher, they brought in ace pitcher Megan Van Ruiswyk. The Cheesemakers scored five runs and had seven hits against Van Ruiswyk to knock her out of the game.
It's the first time this season Van Ruiswyk and Waupun have given up more than four runs in a game.
Monroe (18-8) sealed the game with a five-run sixth off Waupun's No. 3 pitcher. Monroe junior Lexi Hilliard and sophomore Alysha Witt delivered RBI singles. Dillon then crused a three-run double.
"I'm really happy with how we played in the first game and how we hit their ace pitcher," Monroe coach Dale Buvid said.
Monroe senior Kylea Ambrose went 2-for-2 and senior Hannah Vetterli was 2-for-3. Hilliard and Witt were each 2-for-4.
"Hilliard had the big hit to get us off of five," Buvid said.
Dillon pitched 62⁄3 innings to get the win. She gave up three runs on eight hits. Dillon struck out four and walked one.
In the second game of the twinbill, Waupun beat the Cheesemakers 15-6.
Monroe junior Carly Upmann pitched three innings and gave up 11 runs but just three earned runs. The Cheesemakers committed five errors.
"She deserved a better fate," Buvid said of Upmann. "We had some trouble fielding their bunts and their team speed gave us trouble.
"It was downhill after that."
Dillon went 3-for-3 in the second game with two doubles. Upmann went 2-for-3. Both senior Brooke Adams and Vetterli were 2-for-4.
