MILTON - As the tennis season winds down, Monroe's players are gearing up. Monday's 5-2 win at Milton was the last dual of the regular season.
Kristin McArdle's two-hour-plus 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 win over Milton's Taylor Jones in the No. 1 singles match was the highlight of the day. The two top players battled volley after volley and deuce after deuce. Jones is a hard hitter with great saving ability and a nasty serve. However, it was McArdle's consistency that proved to be the difference.
In the No. 2 singles match, Monroe's McKenzie Bruce fell quietly to Megan Burandt 6-2, 6-0. Bruce is still recovering from a knee injury she suffered earlier in the season.
In No. 3 singles, Kiera Berger won handily against Milton's Natalie Casillas 6-3, 6-0. Early on in the second set, Casillas sent Berger balls all over the court, but Berger showed great movement and recovery ability and easily dropped her counterpart.
Emily Grossen fell in the No. 4 singles match to Marianne Moser, 6-3, 6-2. Grossen has spent much of the season on the junior varsity squad and got the call-up for some late-season experience.
On the doubles side, Monroe continued to roll. Pam Lehman and Melissa Hill continued their impressive season at No. 1 doubles. The duo knocked off previously unbeaten Katelyn Ludeking and Lizzie Malzfeld 6-4, 7-6 (7-5).
Kelsey Erickson and Taylor Weis streaked past Katie Severson and Kayla Dettman 6-1, 6-4 in the No. 3 doubles match.
Ashley Hermanson and Gwen Sutter won No. 2 doubles 6-2, 7-6 (7-5). Hermanson and Sutter had a bit of a power surge at times in the second set and sent multiple balls deep behind the back line.
"I think we played really well," head coach Stephanie Miller said of her Cheesemakers. "We had some good matches and kept our heads."
Monroe now has all week to prepare for the Badger Conference Tournament on Saturday and Sunday at the Nielsen Tennis Stadium on the University of Wisconsin campus.
"I think we can do well (at the conference meet),"Miller said. "Our doubles are on fire right now and we're just playing good tennis."
