SOUTH WAYNE — For the first time since the previous millennium, Black Hawk has a new volleyball coach. After more than a quarter century and 300-plus wins, long-time Warriors coach Rachel Wolff stepped down after last season, in which the Warriors lost a 5-set thriller in the sectional final, one away from state.
Taking over will be Jordan Halvorsen, who is learning about her team with haste. Hired just weeks before the season was scheduled to get underway, Halvorsen is taking over a Warriors team with some solid, experienced players. However, there are plenty of holes to fill.
Black Hawk graduated the Six Rivers East Player of the Year, Bailey Butler, and also had all-conference recipients Macie Stauffacher (setter), Makayla Mau (hitter) and Ericka Schulz (libero) play their final game on the court last fall.
“With meeting the girls for the first time this year, (team strengths) are hard to establish. I hope one of our greatest strengths is team bonding,” Halvorsen said.
Halvorsen said challenges await the Warriors this season — they are rebuilding a bit as a team, with a new coach.
“I hope to build strong connections, communication, trust and confidence with the team this year,” Halvorsen said. She also eyes her team continuing to understand the game, and growing in court skills. “Lastly, to have fun and make memories.”
