SOUTH WAYNE — Black Hawk used a series of scoring spurts to put the visiting Shullsburg Miners in a hole they could never dig their way out of as the Warriors rolled to a 59-41 non-conference boys’ basketball victory on Tuesday, Jan. 4.
The Warriors (4-8 overall) grabbed the lead early thanks to a 7-0 run, and then pulled ahead of the Miners (1-9) by double digits with a 9-0 scoring burst midway through the first half.
Black Hawk closed the half on a 14-4 run to build up a 36-15 advantage, and coach Trent Wyssbrod’s crew began the second half with nine unanswered points to extend their lead to 45-15.
Shullsburg whittled the deficit down as close as 16 late in the game, but would get no closer as the Warriors ended a four-game overall losing streak and a four-game slide against the Miners with the win.
Senior Gabe Nelson came off the bench to score a career-high 18 points to lead the Warriors. Senior Dempsey Schliem netted 13 points and junior Lucas Milz added 11 in the Warrior win.
Sophomore Heath Poppy knocked down five 3-pointers on the way to a game-high 24 points for Shullsburg, who have dropped nine straight games since winning their opener.
