Vikings perfect against Ponies

BLANCHARDVILLE — Monticello-Albany went 15-up, 15-down as Pecatonica recorded a perfect game 12-0 on Tuesday, April 18.

“Coy [Ruegsegger] and Max [Steele] pounded the strike zone,” Pecatonica head coach Jim Strommen said. “Our defense made all the plays. I’m proud of our guys for the hard work they put into our baseball program.”

Pecatonica scored four runs in the first inning, leading off the inning with three straight hits. Tyler McKeon singled followed by RBI hits from Jameson Johnson and Elijah Knutson.

Monticello-Albany’s starting pitcher Cody Pryce sat the Vikings down in order in the second, inducing three ground balls. Pecatonica hit around the order in the third, though, scoring an additional seven runs.

Knutson, Ruegsegger and Carson Kurschner hit three consecutive singles, the latter two bringing in runs. After a flyout and 6-3 grounder, Austin Enloe doubled. Charles Anderson drew a five-pitch walk followed by three more hits from McKeon, Johnson and Knutson. Relief pitcher Brayden Bakken got out of the inning by striking our Ruegsegger.

The Viking scored their final run in the fourth, as Max Steele reached on an error. Lukas Rue then drove him home with a double.

On the mound, Ruegsegger and Steele combined for the perfect game with the win going to Ruegsegger. They combined for nine strikeouts. At the plate, Knutson was a perfect 3-for-3 with two runs scored, two RBIs and two stolen bases.

Pryce suffered the loss for Monticello-Albany, giving up eight earned runs on eight hits. He struck out two and walked one.


ARGYLE 5, BLACK HAWK 2

ARGYLE — A pair of two-run innings propelled the Orioles past the Warriors on Tuesday, April 18. 

Max Godfrey led off the bottom of the first with a single and stole his way home. In the second inning, Weston Ganshert hit an RBI single to center, scoring Thomas Nelson and Mason McNett.

With bases loaded in the bottom of the fourth, Garrett Phillipson drew a six-pitch walk. Will Helfvogt then hit an RBI groundout, giving Argyle a 5-1 lead.

Black Hawk scored in the top of the seventh on an error, but Helfvogt got out of the inning by striking out the final batter.

Nelson and Phillipson each went 2-for-3 at the plate, while Ganshert drove in two runs. Ike Waage, who had the lone extra-base hit, collected the win. In five innings, he gave up one earned run on one hit. Waage struck out eight and walked three.

The Warriors recorded three hits — one each from Cooper Baumgartner, Carter Baumgartner and Gabe Tree. Dylan Haldiman suffered the loss, giving up four earned runs in four innings.


CUBA CITY 6, DARLINGTON 3

DARLINGTON — The Redbirds and Cubans entered the fourth inning tied at two, when Cuba City scored three runs to take a lead from which it wouldn’t look back.

After giving up two runs in the first on three hits and a sacrifice fly, Breylin Goebel tied the game with a two-run home run to right, scoring Maddox Goebel.

The Cubans responded with four hits in the fourth, scoring three runs, which proved to be the difference.

Darlington recorded just four hits — one each from Maddox Goebel, Breylin Goebel, Reagan Jackson and Gage Banfield. On the bump, Banfield suffered the loss. He pitched four innings, giving up five earned runs on nine hits. 


EDGEWOOD 14, MONROE 2

MADISON — The Cheesemakers scored two runs in the first to tie the game but were unable to hang with the Crusaders the rest of the way, falling on Tuesday, April 18.

Leadoff hitter Tucker Markham was hit by the pitch, followed by a single from Keegan Dahmen. Both runners moved up a base on an errant throw. Keatin Sweeney’s RBI grounder scored Markham, and Nicholas Welty’s single plated Dahmen.

Monroe received six hits from six different batters. On the mound, Braden Rupnow suffered the loss. He threw 3 1/3 innings, giving up seven earned runs on nine hits.
