Vikings fall in slugfest, 25-21

BLANCHARDVILLE — A football score broke out at a softball game April 2, as Potosi rallied with 10 runs in the final two innings to clip Pecatonica 25-21.

The game opened with the Chieftains holding a 5-4 lead after the first inning and 8-4 through two, but the Vikings put an eight-spot on the board in the bottom of the third to take a 12-8 lead.

After the fourth inning, Pec led 13-10, and the two teams combined for 11 runs in the fifth, with the Vikings extending their advantage to 19-15. Potosi then scored eight in the top of the sixth and two more in the seventh, with the Vikings only able to scratch across two runs in the bottom of the sixth.

Pecatonica had 14 errors in the game, while Potosi had eight miscues.

Lexi McSherry took the loss on the hill for Pecatonica, pitching all seven innings and allowing 25 runs (12 earned) on 15 hits, five walks and six strikeouts. Three of the 15 hits came off the bat of Potosi pitcher Amber Udelhoven, who finished 5 for 6 with three home runs, a double and seven RBIs.

Udelhoven struggled on the mound, allowing 19 runs (nine earned) on nine hits and seven walks with three strikeouts in five innings. Shae Siegert recorded the save for the Chieftains, pitching the final two innings.

Lily Busser and Abby Loomis each had a pair of hits and four runs for Pecatonica, while Busser added three walks. Joselyn White was 1 for 3 with three walks for the Vikings, and Alexia Knutson also walked twice. Busser and McSherry had doubles. Kutson, Nivaeh Gross and Maggie Chrostowski each had two RBIs for Pecatonica.

Loomis, Busser and Gross each had two steals, and the Vikings finished with nine swiped bases in the game. Potosi had seven steals.


Juda-Albany 5, Lena-Winslow 4

LENA — Emily Makos struck out five and walked two as Juda-Albany picked up their first win of the season April 1. Emileigh Dallman was 3 for 3 at the plate with a triple.

Le-Win scored three runs in the second and another in the third to go up 4-0. Juda-Albany responded with two runs in the fourth, and one run in each of the final three innings to get the win.

“The kids played a good game,” Juda-Albany coach Bill Davis said.


Deerfield 12, Juda-Albany 1

DEERFIELD — Dallman took the loss on the hill in the April 2 nonconference game, giving up four earned runs in two innings on six hits, three walks and a strikeout. Makos pitched the final two innings for the Panthers, allowing seven runs on five hits and a walk with two Ks.

Deerfield scored five runs in both the second and third, and added another in the fourth. Juda-Albany’s lone run came in the top of the fifth. The Panthers had four errors defensively.

“We’re young, and we showed our youth and had a couple of errors,” Davis said, adding that Deerfield had “a couple of costly hits.”


Platteville 12, Darlington 1

PLATTEVILLE — The Redbirds scored just one run in the top of the third, while Platteville scored two in the firs, one in the third, four in the fourth and five in the fifth in their nonconference game April 2. 

Darlington’s lone run came after Taylor Crist led off the third with a walk and moved to second on a wild pitch. She scored on Brittney Jacobson’s two-out RBI single.

Alyssa Tuescher took the loss on the mound, pitching 4.1 innings and allowing 12 runs (seven earned) on six hits and six walks with two strikeouts. At the plate, the Redbirds had just two hits and one walk against Platteville pitcher Anica Graney.


Cuba City 8, Darlington 1

CUBA CITY — The Cubans scored three runs in each of the first two innings to stake a sturdy lead against Darlington April 1.

The Redbirds’ only run came in the seventh after leadoff hitter Lucy Heinberg walked and advanced to third on a passed ball. She then scored on a sacrifice fly to center by Kaylyn McGuire.

Darlington had just two hits two walks while striking out 12 times against Cuban’s starter Delaney Ryan.

Tuescher took the loss on the mound, throwing 2.2 innings with six earned runs on one hit, eight walks and two strikeouts. McGuire struck out one in 3.1 innings of relief, allowing two hits and five walks.


Wisconsin Heights 20, New Glarus 2

MAZOMANIE — The Vanguards scored 11 runs in the first and seven in the second as they dominated the Glarner Knights April 2 in a three-inning game.

Maci Carney pitched two innings for New Glarus, allowing 13 runs while Mckenzie Keehn allowed seven runs.

New Glarus had just one hit and committed just one error in the game. The Knights scored their only two runs in the top of the third. Wisconsin Heights batters collected 17 hits and walked eight times in the three innings.


Black Hawk 16, Southwestern 6

SOUTH WAYNE — A seven-run fourth inning sparked the Warriors on Opening Day April 2.

Trailing 3-2 after three, Macie Stauffacher led off the fourth with a triple to right center. Savannah Burmeister and Kaylee Marty both reached, and Bailey Butler doubled to center. Natalie Leuzinger then popped out to second for the first out of the inning, and Hannah Butler reached on an error. Maddy Huschitt then doubled to right and Mia Jackson singled past second base. Stauffacher ended the inning with a bases empty groundout on a dribbler in front of the plate.

Black Hawk score five more runs in the fifth inning and added two more in the sixth to end the game by mercy rule.

Bailey Butler had two hits and Jackson was 4 for 4.

“It was the middle of our lineup that got us started. Mia Jackson was Miss Clutch for us, batting 4 for 4 with a couple of RBIs,” Black Hawk coach Curt Leuzinger said. “The top of our lineup struggled, but being our first game of the season I was happy to see our girls put the ball in play and capitalize on our small game with bunts.”
