ORFORDVILLE — Parkview-Albany wrestling held its awards night on Wednesday, March 14, celebrating another successful 2023-24 season.
As a team, the Vikings were 17-7 in duals and 6-0 in conference to earn back-to-back Trailways South Conference Championship titles.
Individually, senior Sam Schwengels (190) concluded his decorated career, adding more honors to his resume. He was the Trailways South Male Wrestler of the Year, earning first-team all-conference. During the season, Schwengels also picked up his 100th career win. This year, Schwengels qualified for sectionals for the third time and state the second. He made the podium this season, finishing sixth. Schwengels also recorded the fastest pin on the team this season — in just ten seconds. He was voted the team’s MVP.
Wes Egan (215) continued to build up his resume in 2023-24. He picked up his 100th career win as a junior and made first-team all-conference. Egan has qualified for sectionals in all three years of his high school career and made a second-straight trip to state. After finishing sixth in 2022-23, Egan improved to take fifth. With 32 pins this season, Egan set the junior and overall most pins record.
Danny Finley (126) was a first-team all-conference selection. He qualified for sectionals for the second time in his career and punched his first ticket to the WIAA individual state tournament. Finley was also voted the McNair Most Dedicated on the Parkview-Albany wrestling team.
Sydney Coyne (285) was the fourth 1st AC wrestler. As a member of the inaugural Parkview-Albany girls wrestling team, she was also the program’s first female to qualify for state.
Autumn Hill (107) and Slater Valley (113) made second-team AC. Valley was also a two-time sectional qualifier.
Other team awards went to Sam Vogt for Hein’s Most Improved and Peter Roth for Underclassmen.
With the conclusion of the 2023-24 season, head coach Joel Steinmann will be stepping away from his coaching duties.
“‘Just one more’ — my favorite saying,” Steinmann said. “But this one will be the final one after 21 years at Parkview/Albany and 26 years of coaching. It’s time to step back and slow down a little bit. There is a lot of talent coming up and it will be fun to watch them from the stands.”
In 21 years with Parkview-Albany wrestling, Steinmann has coached 25 conference champions, 39 regional champions, 90 sectional qualifiers, 4 sectional champions, 22 state qualifiers, and 9 state placers. He’s also led two conference championship teams, one regional championship team and collected 98 team wins.
