Redbirds keep winning, have shot at SWAL title

DARLINGTON — The Redbirds picked up late season wins over Iowa-Grant and Mineral Point earlier in the week. Darlington beat Iowa-Grant 89-43 Feb. 8, then turned around and beat the Pointers two days later, 87-82.

In the win at Iowa-Grant, Carter Lancaster led Darlington with 18 points and 7 rebounds, while Hunter Hardyman had 17 points, including three big 3s. Freshman Will Murray finished with a double-double (17 points, 11 rebounds). Cayden Rankin added 10 points himself. Isaac Hill led Iowa-Grant with 19 points.

The Redbirds were 6 of 17 from deep and hit 13 of 16 free throw attempts. They also grabbed 51 rebounds as a unit, stole the ball 16 times and finished with 21 assists. Darlington led 62-24 at halftime.

In the afternoon win over Mineral Point, Lancaster finished with 25 points, Hardyman 19, Rankin 16 and Murray 13.

Darlington (16-4, 11-1), ranked No. 5 in D3, is tied for the SWAL title with D5 top-ranked Cuba City (17-1, 11-1). Cuba City is at Fennimore Feb. 11, and then at Boscobel the next night. Darlington has Riverdale Feb. 11 and then Fennimore the next night.


Turner 76, Brodhead 71, 2 OT

BELOIT — Owen Leifker had 23 points and Connor Green added 19 more, but the Cardinals lost a heartbreaker in double-overtime to Turner Feb. 8.

Brodhead had four players in double figures, with Brady Malkow finishing with 11 points, and Cade Walker 10. Malkow added 10 rebounds. Turner also had four players in double figures, led by Donavhan Cain’s 26. 

The Cardinals trailed 33-21 at halftime.

In other area basketball results, Williams Bay rolled Albany 85-37 Feb. 8, and on Feb. 9, Pecatonica defeated Riverdale 65-58 and Argyle tripped up Juda 47-34.
