DARLINGTON — The Darlington Redbirds were SWAL, regional and sectional champions on the track in 2021 and sent three runners to state, while the girls squad were regional champs and had eight runners take in the memories of competing at state.
This year, coach Patrick Reichling wants his squad to re-load, not rebuild.
“We are fortunate to have brought back many of our athletes from last year,” Reichling said, while admitting “we did lost some key seniors that provided guidance and stability to the younger athletes.
“Our numbers are starting to return to normal after COVID. We have a good group of young athletes that are going to help us produce in all 18 events. Having the numbers to make sure you can spread your athletes out without putting too much strain on them is the key to being successful as a team.”
Reichling believes his team has depth up and down the lineup, though the Redbirds are not just content in believing that to be the case.
“We are hoping to continue to strengthen our team in all areas. We were very young last year and it allowed us to get a lot of experience with our athletes,” Reichling said. “This year we will focus on progressing in our individual events, while making sure we are able to compete in all events.”
Darlington needs to strengthen field events and individual races. The distance races and sprints should be the strongest suit.
“The SWAL is always competitive in track and field. I think it will be a tight race between many of the schools as we all see a return to a regular spring sports schedule,” Reichling said.
Returning on the girls side include state qualifiers Gabby Leuchtenmacher, Alyza Johnson, Abby Solverson, Zoie Zuberbuhler, Rachel Reuter, Addison DePauw, Judith Meister and Alexis Murray.
On the boys side, state qualifiers Easton Evenstad, Rhett Reuter and George West return.
