Raiders reach sectionals; MHS bows out

VERONA — The Raiders advanced to the sectional semifinals with a 3-0 win over Platteville-Lancaster Oct. 20 at Reddan Park.

After defeating Mauston 3-0 in the regional semifinal, Sugar River controlled the Hillmen in the regional championship.

Justin Knoebl scored in the fifth minute off a pass from Jack Gentilli to put Sugar River up 1-0, then Breckin Faber added another goal in the 38th minute. Gentilli capped the scoring with a goal in the 70th minute in the second half.

The Raiders (14-1-1) outshot Platteville-Lancaster 13-6, including 11-5 on goal. Sugar River goalkeeper Julian Lutz had five saves.

In the win over Mauston, Faber had a pair of goals assisted by Jaden Kreklow and Knoebl scored the third goal in the second half.

Sugar River will now take on top-seeded McFarland (15-4-0) at 6 p.m. Thursday. The winner will play either Mount Horeb (8-9-1) or Madison Edgewood (10-5-3) for a chance to advance to state.


Mount Horeb 4, Monroe 0

MOUNT HOREB — The Cheesemakers had their season end in the first round of the WIAA Division 3 playoffs Oct. 18 with a 4-0 loss to Mount Horeb.

The Vikings scored goals just over a minute apart in the first half to take a 2-0 lead into the break. Caleb Guenther scored on a pass from Gabriel Guenther at the 34:20 mark to break a scoreless tie. Just 64 seconds later Caleb Guenther scored again.

In the second half, Mount Horeb’s Tyler Banfield scored goals in the 48th and 58th minute to seal the victory on the pitch.

Monroe had just four shots on goal all game compared to the Vikings’ 10. Devan Schulte had six saves for the Cheesemakers.

Monroe ends the season with a 5-13-2 overall record. Mount Horeb advanced past Jefferson in the regional final 3-0 and plays Madison Edgewood Thursday in the sectional semifinals.
