MADISON — Despite a smaller squad, the Vikings pulled out a win in their opening round of the WIAA tournament on Tuesday, Feb. 21, defeating Madison Abundant Life Christian 42-41.

Brooklyn Johnsrud was unavailable due to illness, and Diana Hendrickson went down three minutes into the game and did not return.

“I am so proud of the girls tonight,” Pecatonica head coach Linda Hendrickson said. “It was an overall team effort tonight.”

After a deadlock 23-23 at half, Chloe Schraepfer stepped up to score nine of her 12 points in the second half. She did all this while drawing her fourth foul with 13 minutes left in the game.

“I made the decision to put her back in with seven minutes remaining,” Linda Hendrickson said. “Chloe is a smart girl and can usually handle playing in foul trouble. She just got caught in a couple of bad situations.”

While Schraepfer was out, freshman Loretta Tisch stepped up, scoring a season-high 14 points. It was Kaisen Kolb’s layup — her only points of the game —  which proved to be the difference-maker, giving Pecatonica the lead late. Anna Tisch also contributed to the offense with nine points, including a 3-pointer.

BRODHEAD 50, RICHLAND CENTER 36

BRODHEAD — Addison Yates scored a career-high 19 points to lead the Cardinals to victory in the regional quarterfinal on Tuesday, Feb. 21.

The junior went 2-for-2 from the line with three 3-pointers. Abbie Dix also scored in double figures with 16 points, including a pair of free-throws. Alexis Kammerer was responsible for Brodhead’s remaining 3-pointer.

RIO 66, JUDA 27

RIO — The Panthers saw their season come to an end in the regional quarterfinal on Tuesday, Feb. 21. Juda compiled a 3-21 overall record and 1-11 mark in the Six Rivers East Conference. Its lone conference win came against Argyle, 40-33, on Feb. 10.

Briliey Swedlund paced Juda in its loss to Rio, scoring nine points with a three. On the season, Jackie Nusbaum led the Panthers in both scoring and rebounds with 6.8 ppg and 8.1 rpg.

POTOSI-CASSVILLE 37, BLACK HAWK 28

POTOSI — The Warriors lost their opening playoff game for the first time since 2006 on Tuesday, Feb. 21. Black Hawk finished the season 9-15 overall and 6-6 in the Six Rivers East Conference.

The team suffered a great loss when senior Tara Wellnitz tore her ACL after just two games, but fellow senior Raylin Peterson stepped up in her place. Peterson averaged 11.9 ppg, while Jaliyah Collins and Hailey Wellnitz controlled the game on the boards with 6.8 and 6.0 rpg, respectively. Wellnitz will continue her basketball career at UW-Stevens Point in the fall.

KICKAPOO 63, ARGYLE 20

VIOLA — The Orioles couldn’t contain the Panthers’ offense, as 10 different players scored in the regional quarterfinal game on Tuesday, Feb. 21.

Argyle ended its season 2-23 overall and 1-11 in the Six Rivers East Conference. After the graduation of a talented senior class, the Orioles relied on newcomers or underclassmen this year. First-time varsity player Jaylin Hartwig sparked the offense with 10.7 ppg, while sophomore Mya McNett and senior Hannah Gierhart led on the boards with 7.6 and 7.3 rpg, respectively.
