NEW GLARUS — In a Dec. 8 game against Richland Center put together at the last minute, the Knights won it just the same.
The Hornets (2-1) led much of the entire game, which was put together just the day before and played at the New Glarus Elementary School. Richland Center held a double-digit advantage in the second half, only for the Glarner Knights (2-1) to rally and close it out in double overtime, 91-86.
Mason Martinson had 18 points to lead New Glarus, including 15 after halftime. Nathan Streiff had 13 points — 11 of which were after halftime. Carter Siegenthaler (13), Dain Walter (13) and AC Strok (12) all scored in double digits for the Knights, while Jack Parman (9), Darris Schuett (8) and Bryce Stampfli (5) also contributed in scoring.
All five of Stampfli’s points came in the overtime sessions, and both he and Siegenthaler drained 3-pointers and jumpers. Martinson had six points in the overtime sessions.
Richland Center led 33-22 at halftime as New Glarus battled foul trouble. In the second half, the Knights outscored the Hornets 49-38 to tie it at 71. Both teams had more than 14 fouls after halftime, and Tyler Rizner of Richland Center was called for a technical. Walter, Strok and Schuett all fouled out for the Knights, with Streiff, Parman and Siegenthaler each finishing with four fouls. Four Hornets fouled out of the game, including Rizner, who led his team with 22 points.
Both teams scored four points in the first overtime, but New Glarus outscored Richland Center 16-11 in the second overtime to win. As a team, New Glarus was just 19 of 37 from the free throw line while Richland Center finished 30 of 42.
The win was second in as many days for New Glarus, which knocked off Platteville 74-42 on Dec. 7. In that game, the Knights jumped out to a 36-17 lead at halftime and never looked back.
Walter led New Glarus with 18 points in the paint. Siegenthaler (15), Strok (12) and Martinson (8) were also main scoring threats for the Knights, who finished 3 of 4 from the free throw line.
Up next, the Knights is a road game at Lodi (1-0) Dec. 11, then a home contest against Marshall (1-1) Dec. 14.
Darlington 68, Southwestern 48
HAZEL GREEN — The Redbirds led by 13 at halftime and didn’t let Southwestern make a big run in the second half of their game Dec. 8.
Ranked third in the first WisSports.net Coaches Poll of the year in Division 4, Darlington had four players in double figures. Carter Lancaster scored 18 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to lead the Redbirds, while Easton Evenstad dropped 13 points, Curtis Stone 12 and Cayden Rankin 11.
Darlington hit 28 of 55 (50.9%) shots from the field, but just 3 of 13 (23.0%) from beyond the arc. The Redbirds were also 9 of 11 (81.8%) from the free throw line.
Albany 56, Juda 52
JUDA — The Comets led by four at halftime and held the advantage at the end of regulation of their game Dec. 8.
Albany ran off to a 28-24 lead on the host Panthers at halftime, thanks to 10 points from Clay Hulbert. Hulbert led the Comets with 13 points in the game, with teammate Andy Gertsch adding 9 and Rob Schroeder chipping in with 8. Albany finished 9 of 15 from the free throw line and hit seven 3-pointers.
Juda was 9 of 21 from the free throw line with seven 3s as well. Aaron Makos led the Panthers with 17 points, while Toby Hosch and Mason Kammerer each had 13.
Edgerton 77, Brodhead 45
BRODHEAD — The Cardinals fell into a 39-11 hole at halftime against the Crimson Tide Dec. 7 and never recovered.
Clayton Jenny led Edgerton with 23 points and 11 rebounds, with Peyton Fox scoring 16 points, Drew Hanson 14 and Konner Knauf 11. Edgerton forced Brodhead into 33 turnovers in the game, including 21 off of steals.
Owen Leifker led the Cardinals with 18 points, and Devon Anderson had 9. Both players hit three 3s.
Elsewhere on Dec. 8, Lancaster defeated Argyle 60-36.
Girls Basketball
Marshall 70, New Glarus 42
NEW GLARUS — The Glarner Knights ran into a buzzsaw Dec. 8, dropping their conference opener to top-ranked Marshall.
The Cardinals are led by two future NCAA DI players in Anna Lutz and Laura Nickel, both of whom combined to outscore the Knights. Lutz had 26, while Nickel finished with 21. Marshall led 35-18 at halftime.
“Another tough challenge for us,” New Glarus coach Kevin Parman said, as it was the Knights’ second straight game against a No. 1-ranked team in the state following an 80-40 loss to Black Hawk (D5) the week before. “When you play teams like Marshall and Black Hawk, you learn in a hurry a lot about yourselves. If you want to be the best, you play the best.”
Jaylynn Benson and Emma Marty each had 10 points for New Glarus, with freshman Lindsey Schadewalt adding 8 points.
Brodhead 63, Big Foot 23
BRODHEAD — Abbie Dix scored 18 points and Kiarra Moe added 16 as the Cardinals thumped the Chiefs Dec. 7.
Brodhead jumped out to a 42-12 advantage at halftime thanks to 14 points from Dix and 11 from Moe, who hit three 3-pointers. Onnikah Oliver added two 3s in the opening half and finished with 8 points in the game.
In other area girls basketball action, Albany defeated Palmyra-Eagle 71-48 Dec. 8, and Monticello beat Williams Bay Dec. 7, 61-48.
