MONROE — The Cheesemakers made a few tweaks in the lineup that made all the difference in a three-set sweep of Beloit Turner in a nonconference match Tuesday.

“This was a great team effort by everyone,” Monroe coach Heidi Witt said. “We played with heart and didn’t let much hit the floor.”

The lineup changes took effect immediately as the Cheesemakers won the first game convincingly, 25-16.

“A few position changes brought a renewed sense of energy and fire. Seeing the girls play scrappy is exciting and the team builds off of those great plays,” Witt said. “We moved Cassi Gersbach back to middle hitter and Chloe Bunker to an outside hitter and that sparked a bigger presence in our net play.”

Monroe would go on to win the second set 25-19 and closed out the third set 25-16.

“We are really happy with this change and hope that the momentum from tonight continues,” Witt said.

Zoee Pond had nine kills and Bunker and Gersbach each had six for the Cheesemakers. Davis had four aces and four digs, while Bri Seagreaves had four digs and three aces. Pond added three aces, Lily Frehner dished out 22 assists and had two blocks, and Makayla Harrow came up with a pair of timely blocks.

“We had solid serving with a few key aces coming from Lexi Davis and Makayla Harrow, our other middle hitter, has really improved her blocking abilities and has come up with some key stuff in matches,” Witt said.

Monroe was scheduled to play Madison Edgewood in a Badger South matchup Thursday and is playing in today’s Brodhead Invitational.

Black Hawk 3, Juda 1

JUDA — The Warriors dominated the first set before squeaking by in the second, inevitably triumphing over the Panthers Tuesday 25-7, 25-23, 25-13.

“Black Hawk used strong serving to open Set 1, keeping Juda out of system,” Juda coach Scott Anderson said. “Hannah Butler served and attacked well.”

Butler had 15 kills and four aces to lead Black Hawk and Savannah Burmeister dished out 13 assists. Kristen Knapp, Sydney Delzer and Brooklyn Allaback each had a block for the Warriors, which were 3-0 headed into Thursday’s scheduled showdown with defending Six Rivers East champion Argyle.

In the second set, Juda adjusted and was able to get strong serves from Montana Steimman and two timely kills by Hannah Powers. Trailing 23-22, Butler connected on a kill and served out the final two points for Black Hawk.

“That momentum carried to Game 3 with Black Hawk jumping to a 5-0 lead,” Anderson said. “Juda dug well, recording 45 digs, but Black Hawk was strong on the attack. I was proud of our hustle and effort — we dug a lot of balls.”

Triniti Elmer led Juda with 15 digs and Powers had seven kills and a block. Steimann had eight assists for the Panthers team, which also got two aces from Karlee Kesler and a block from Brianna Crull.
