MONROE — The Monroe Cheesemakers honored long-time track coach Richard Glendenning with the annual Glendenning meet on Monday, April 10. Despite splitting the boys and girls into five different teams, Monroe snagged the top five spots.
Glendenning served on the Monroe track and field coaching staff for 51 years, specializing in pole vault. He was inducted into the Wisconsin Track Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2011, the same year of the first Glendenning Invite. He passed away three years later in January 2014.
In prior years, Monroe had just two boys and girls teams each, but with 51 boys in the program, the Cheesemakers added another squad. Both head coaches Scott Mosher and Eric Jubeck agreed the format gave their athletes a chance to shine in events they might not normally compete.
“It was a perfect opportunity for all our athletes to get a lot of events in,” Mosher said. “One of my favorite things about splitting the teams up is seeing kids try new events. We had young athletes trying events like triple jump and hurdles, and every year we find surprise athletes who end up helping us in varsity meets down the road. This year was no exception, and I’m incredibly excited for the potential out of these athletes.”
Black Hawk, Albany, Pecatonica-Argyle, Benton-Scales Mound-Shullsburg and Monticello also participated in event.
Three meet records were broken — two for boys and one for girls.
Lauren Coppes, who took first in all four events that she participated in, broke the girls long jump record previously held by Lexus Trickel of Monroe (2017) and Paige Murphy of BSMS (2016). Coppes jumped 17 feet, six 1/2 inches, beating the previous record of 16-07.75 by almost a foot.
“She was overdue to pop one in the long jump, and that is exactly what she did,” Jubeck said. “It was the fourth longest jump in school history.”
Pecatonica-Argyle’s Ridge Toay ran the 300-meter hurdles in 40.44 seconds, beating Monroe’s Jason Carpenter’s record (2022) of 41.48 seconds. He was just two tenths of a second away from Carpenter’s 110-meter hurdle record, too.
Black Hawk’s 4x100 relay of Jovanny Erickson, Andrew Figi, Lucas Milz and Teegan Sweeney beat a 12-year record previously set by Darlington. The Warriors finished in a time of 45.86 seconds, beating the 46.28-second record by nearly half a second.
