MONROE — After starting the season 7-0, Monroe dropped its first match of 2023 to Edgewood, 5-2, on Tuesday, April 25.

The Cheesemakers received points at No. 2 and No. 3 singles. Wes Saunders, who remains undefeated on the season, defeated his opponent in straight sets 6-1, 6-0.

“He [Saunders] plays really smart tennis and is such a strong piece night in and night out for us,” Monroe head coach Matt Bordner said.

No. 3 singles, Gavin Eckerman, defeated his opponent in straight sets, too, 6-4, 6-2.

“He’s worked so hard to improve at his game, so it was really awesome to see his work pay off in what was the best win of his career with us,” Bordner said.

The No. 1 doubles showdown was the only match to go to three sets, where Edgewood prevailed 6-4, 4-6, 10-8.

“Ryan and Max left it all out there for us,” Bordner said. “They played pretty smart tennis the whole match but just need to get more aggressive at finishing off points. They’re still both so new to doubles but have made big strides together, and tonight, they put themselves in a position to win but came up just short.”
