MONROE — The Cheesemakers brought back its annual varsity doubles tournament Aug. 23, but had its Badger Conference opener against Fort Atkinson rained out Aug. 24.
“We brought back the Monroe Doubles Tournament, which was a lot of fun,” Monroe coach Matt Bordner said. “This used to be a really strong tournament with eight teams that Monroe always hosted, and a few of the local coaches had been asking about getting it back going again. We decided to start with four teams and run it as a round robin and had a lot of fun doing it.”
The tournament opened with a short rain delay and matches beginning around 11 a.m. Oregon, Milton and Baraboo all participated.
“We had some nice performances today, but Baraboo took the plaque as they won the tournament. They finished with 13 wins, while Oregon had eight, Monroe had five, and Milton had one,” Bordner said. “We still weren’t at full strength, as I sat out Lydia Setterstrom who continues to nurse a wrist injury and Syd Conway was gone today as well. Considering this, I was pretty happy with our performance.”
In the A1 flight, which consisted of a team’s No. 1 and 2 singles players teaming up, Monroe’s Kylie Miller and Allison Wunschel finished 1-2 overall. The duo defeated Milton’s Natalie Niemeyer and Amanda Cudziovic 6-4, 6-1. They also lost to Baraboo’s Maggie Cleary and Claire Bildsten 6-2, 6-2. Against Oregon’s Ella Peotter and Stephanie Lo, the Monroe pair lost 6-1, 6-2.
“We picked up a win at flight 1A as Kylie and Allison beat a solid Milton team,” Bordner said. “I think they had a lot of fun playing together as they are really good friends, and I enjoyed seeing their energy and movement.”
Monroe sisters Bella and Melena Brunton played in the regular No. 1 doubles bracket and defeated Milton’s Holly Garber and Hana Grossman 6-1, 6-3. The Bruntons lost to Oregon’s Ella Wirtz and Emma Yeakley 6-0, 6-1 and to Baraboo’s Lanie Koppie and Paige Lewison 6-1, 6-0.
“Melana and Bella played the true No. 1 doubles flight, and struggled in the Baraboo and Oregon matchups but picked up a solid win against Milton in their last match of the day,” Bordner said.
In the second flight, Monroe’s Morgan Johnson and Bre Giasson finished 2-1 on the day. The duo defeated Oregon’s Anna Martin and Lucy Nonemacher 6-4, 6-2, as well as Milton’s Romy Khoury and Abby Kueng 6-1, 6-2. Giasson and Johnson lost to Baraboo’s Alice Davies and Annie Langkamp 6-2, 6-4.
“No. 2 doubles was our strongest flight,” Bordner said, adding that Davies and Langkamp were a steady opponent, as shown by their 3-0 record on the day. “I was happy that they competed well. They played together last year and so they have that chemistry piece started pretty well. Bre isn’t the most technical player, but she moves great and communicates well, and is really consistent at keeping it in play. Morgan’s play has definitely stepped up and I’m excited about her growth too.”
At No. 3 doubles, Alicia Brunton and Kate Kundert went 1-2 overall, defeating Milton’s Kate Bucklin 6-4, 6-2, while losing to Oregon’s Kimberly Urban and Anna Johnson 7-5, 6-1 and Baraboo’s Eryn Benson and Emily Finnegan 6-3, 6-1.
“I believe this was Alicia’s first doubles match of her career, which is part of the reason why I think it’s so fun to do tournaments like this. For her to continue to get more work with volleys and angles is great, and her and Kate played well the whole day and picked up a nice win against Milton,” Bordner said.
At No. 4 doubles, Monroe’s Lindsey Leuzinger was 0-2 on the day, losing one match with Taylor Jacobson against Oregon 6-2, 7-6 (4), and another against Baraboo with Katelyn Isley, 6-2, 6-3.
“At No. 4 doubles, Milton was unable to field a team so we only had 3 schools in this flight. We had Taylor and Lindsey play together against Oregon, and they really fought hard in their second set to get back into the match. They lost in a set tiebreaker, but I’m just so happy with their growth. Lindsey has come a long ways since last year and Taylor is doing great for how new she is to the sport,” Bordner said. “Our second match against Baraboo we brought up Katelyn Isley from our JV and she did a nice job filling in as well since we were a little shorthanded still.”
