MONROE — Monroe boys basketball coach Brian Bassett said he and his staff were pleased with the reception of their weekly camps this past summer.
Bassett said that players grades 3-12 spent about 90 minutes each Thursday for six weeks participating in an afternoon camp to improve their skills.
Camp drills included ball handling, passing, shooting and 1-on-1 offensive skills.
About 55 youth players in total took part in the camps, with 25 players in grades 3-5, and another 30 from grades 6-8. Bassett said that his high school-level players (9-12), used two contact days to start the summer and also spent time on Mondays on the court during open gyms.
“Players grades 3-12 also had morning shooting opportunities every Tuesday and Thursday morning from 7 a.m. to 8 a.m. where all they did was shoot,” Bassett said.
Players were also able to utilize the NOAH computerized shooting system, as well as HomeCourt, an app for Apple’s iPad and iPhones which records video of shooting sessions and keeps track of shooting percentage.
Bassett added that the boys coaching staff “would like to thank Dearth motors for their 10-plus years of sponsoring Monroe boys basketball camps and Mike Mancini State Farm Insurance for his second year of sponsoring morning shooting program.”
High school practice for the 2019-20 season begins Nov. 18 with Monroe’s first game set for Nov. 30 at Evansville. The Cheesemakers will play their first home game Dec. 3 against Waunakee.
