MONROE — Monroe-New Glarus made a splash at its home dual on Tuesday, Sept. 26, defeating Badger Conference and eight-time defending Division 2 state champions Edgewood 87-83.
Last year, the Cheese Knights won just one event — Delaney Lynch in the 500-yard freestyle — and fell 126-44. On Tuesday, MNG won eight events and set two new team records.
“They supported one another, had strong finishes, and were determined to get to the wall and out touch the swimmer next to them,” MNG co-head coach Rachel Root said. “It truly was a team effort and they displayed the strong depth that they have as a team.”
Hadleigh Shunk, Harper Paradis, Riley Hoesly and Lynch broke the team’s 200-meter medley relay record, set in 2000. Paradis, Lynch Anna Zenter and Megan Chapman broke their own 200-meter freestyle relay, set at the last home meet against Sauk Prairie.
Edgewood has won the last eight Division 2 state titles and was runner up in 2014 and 2000. In the last eight years, the Crusaders have beaten the state runners up by a combined 1,013.5 points.
