BARABOO — A short-handed goal from Wyatt Janecke 30 seconds into overtime lifted Monroe over Baraboo 2-1 for the Cheesemakers’ second conference win on Tuesday, Jan. 17.

“I thought we played very well and the boys played very hard,” Monroe head coach Barry Einbeck said. “They finished the game tonight.”

Seven minutes into the game, Janecke broke the stalemate with a goal. He was assisted by Cole Buholzer and Carson Kurschner.

Despite two roughing penalties on Luke Schweda in the second period, Monroe was able to score. Baraboo, on the other hand, found the back of the net with a shot from Peyton Sloan.

In the third period, both teams had a power-play opportunity but weren’t able to cash in. In overtime, Monroe committed another penalty, tipping the scales in favor of Baraboo.

Down a skater, Janecke evaded the Baraboo defense and found the back of the net off an assist from Kurschner to win the game.

The Cheesemakers outshot the Thunderbirds 59-37. In net, Xander Obert recorded 36 saves for a .972 save percentage. The win was Monroe’s second of conference, having defeated Baraboo earlier in the year 4-1.

BELOIT — The Knights kept pace with second-place Spartans in a conference game on Tuesday, Jan. 17, falling one goal short.

Madison scored in the first three minutes with a goal from Rudy Richards. Beloit responded five minutes later with an unassisted goal from Max Allen. Both teams committed penalties late in the period but were unable to score with an extra skater.

Cy Potter started the third period strong for Beloit, scoring 28 seconds in. Although Jayden Piccione went to the box for tripping, the Knights held the Spartans off, going into the final minutes of the game tied.

With just under two minutes left to play, Milo Boyle found the back of the net on an assist from Elmer to break the tie. His goal proved to be the game-winner, as Beloit had no response.

Cole Rowald and Allen led the Knights with two points each — Rowald from two assits and Allen from two goals. In net, Jameson Flanagan recorded 36 saves on 40 shots for a .900 save percentage.
