Petitgoue reaches 1,000
On Jan. 29, Cuba City knocked off Carmen Northwest 91-69, clinching longtime Cubans coach Jerry Petitgoue his 1,000th career win as a Wisconsin high school basketball coach. Petitgoue, 81, began his career at Gratiot High School, coaching for four seasons. He’s in his 47th year at Cuba City.
Impressively, not only is Petitgoue’s 1,000 wins unprecedented and unapproached by any other coach in state history — no other boys varsity basketball coach has even coached 1,000 games, according to Mark Miller of Wisconsin Basketball Yearbook and WisSports.net.
Unofficially, Petitgoue is the 43rd high school basketball coach in United States history to reach the 1,000-mark. Mississippi’s Norris Ashley went 1,697-860 combined in both boys and girls basketball, reaching the state championship 20 times with nine titles.
