SAUK CITY — The Cheesemakers finished sixth out of eight teams at Lake Wisconsin Country Club in a Badger West Mini-Meet April 19. Edgewood won the meet with a combined team score of 308, with Crusader Alex Weiss the medalist with a 2-over-par 72. Monroe collectively shot a 371 and finished ahead of Portage and Reedsburg.
Leading the way for Monroe was Brady Spotts, who shot an 84. Bert Leach and Aaron Benzschawel each carded a 94, and Carson Leuzinger finished with a 99.
Spotts had nine pars on the day, and had a seven-hole stretch where he was just +1 overall. Leach had five pars and birdied the par-3 12th hole. Benzschawel had six pars, including five of the final six holes on the back nine.
The meet was the second Badger West Mini Meet of the season, and six of the seven teams finished in the team rankings the same as the first week, with only Mount Horeb and Oregon swapping second and third place. Weiss has won both events.
The next Badger West Mini Meet is scheduled for May 2 at Yahara Hills Golf Course outside of Madison.
New Glarus fourth at Edelweiss mini meet
NEW GLARUS — The Glarner Knights finished a stroke out of third place April 19 at the season’s first Capitol Conference Mini Meet, held at Edelweiss Chalet Country Club. Lodi defeated Cambridge for the team title thanks to a tiebreaker, eight strokes ahead of New Glarus, which carded a 175, one shy of Lakeside Lutheran. Monticello-Belleville was fifth (183) out of the nine teams in the meet.
“I was proud of how our guys played,” said Knights coach Jonathan Goodness. “We were fortunate to finally have some good weather for our first meet after having a rough start to the season with a few canceled meets. It was good to see the boys making good decisions off the tee and continue to improve on their work around the green.”
Ben Lukszys led the Knights with a 41; Carter Siegenthaler shot a 43; Zak Arnett carded a 44 and Nolan Bodenstein added a 47 in his first varsity meet.
“Ben had several putts lip out during his round, which I know he would like to have those shots back. He managed to finish the last two holes with pars including a par save 8-foot putt on the par 5, eighth hole. Carter Siegenthaler played well in his first varsity golf meet. Zak Arnett survived some trouble early with a triple on the second hole. I was pleased to see Zak maintain his composure after a big number for him. He rallied back to grind out some pars,” Goodness said.
Goodness expects all of his players to encounter some trouble on the course during their rounds this season.
“The way we bounce back and leave the bad holes behind us will help determine how far we can go this season. I expect our team will spend time on the putting green and in the bunkers during practice and continue to employ our hard working, resilient mindset which we have adopted this season,” Goodness said.
