BRODHEAD — The Cardinals bring back practically a full roster from last winter, a season in which Brodhead finished 12-4 overall.

Among those back include four all-conference players: junior center Abbie Dix (17.6 ppg, 9.7 rpg), second-team senior point guard Kiarra Moe (11.7 ppg, 2 apg, 5.8 rpg), and honorable mention senior guards Madisyn Kail (7.9 ppg) and Onnikah Oliver (6.2 ppg).

Also returning are juniors Alexis Kammerer and Taetum Hoesly, plus sophomore Addison Yates and senior Tori Urness.

“With the majority of our team coming back from last season, I would expect to be competitive night in and out,” said head coach Brian Kammerer.

He said the team’s offense will be one of its major strengths this year. The roster is full of balance, with Moe, Kail and Oliver able to swing the ball around the perimeter, and Dix in the paint able to clean up inside. Dix, who was third in the Rock Valley in scoring average last season, has been getting looks from multiple schools, including Wisconsin, Marquette and UW-Milwaukee, thanks to her offseason success on the AAU circuit.

“I believe we will be more versatile on the offensive end, with numerous girls having the ability to score on a given night. This team is very unselfish and distributes the ball well,” coach Kammerer said.

McFarland and Edgerton are expected to be among the top teams in the conference. Last winter, McFarland finished 9-5 overall while Edgerton was 17-5. McFarland sophomore Teagan Mellegni is one of the highest prized recruits in the state. She averaged more than 19 ppg last year and has scholarship offers from eight schools, including Wisconsin, plus has interest from another 18.

“Edgerton returns the core of the team that competed for a conference championship last year,” coach Kammerer said.

What the pandemic did for the players and coaches last year was encourage teams to embrace living in the moment, coach Kammerer said.

“With the unknown in our current pandemic, we must appreciate every night we are able to take the floor.  We must learn to accept our roles and must get better every night,” he said.
