Brodhead-Juda defeats Parkview-Albany; 3rd at Deerfield

BRODHEAD — The Cardinals picked up a solid win Jan. 27 at home against Parkview-Albany, 45-27.

The Vikings were not able to fill out an entire lineup, leading to five forfeits. Of the nine wrestled matches, P-A won five and outscored Brodhead-Juda 27-21.

The first varsity match saw Brodhead-Juda’s Seth Mansfield pin Jayden Anderson at 152 pounds. After a Vikings forfeit at 160, Sam Schwengels put P-A on the board at 170, scoring an 8-1 victory at 170. The Cardinals received back-to-back forfeits at 182 and 195, but the Vikings ran off three straight victories via pin at 220, 285 and 106, making it 24-21 on the scoreboard.

Brodhead-Juda’s Jacob Lohmar won via pin at 113 to get things back on track. He led 7-4 after the first period, and nearly pinned Connor Flippin in the closing moments of the frame. After going up 12-4 in the second, Lohmar finished off the pin with eight ticks to go before the break.

The 120-pound match resulted in a double forfeit, and at 126, P-A’s Ian Suer scored a pin moments into the third period to beat Jameson Wallin. Suer led 8-0 after the first period, and was up 11-2 through two frames.

With the Vikings trailing 30-27, the deciding match of the night came at 132. Evan Suer found himself ahead of Joe Lohmar 5-1 after the first period. Lohmar scored two points in the second to bring it back to 5-3. The third period was all Lohmar, who outscored Suer 6-0 in the final stanza to secure a 9-5 victory and put his team ahead 33-27. The next match, 138 pounds, gave Brodhead-Juda an insurmountable lead, as the Vikings had to forfeit.

In the final competition of the night at 145 pounds, Brodhead-Juda senior Mario Reyes fell behind Luc Cramer 4-3 in the second period, only to flip the script and pin Cramer in the blink of an eye.

Two days later at the Deerfield Scramble, the Cardinals finished fifth out of 19 teams. Random Lake dominated with 700 team points, ahead of Menasha (565), Sun Prairie (512), Stoughton (502) and Brodhead-Juda (414).

Mansfield finished second at 145, while Marcus McIntyre (138) and Joe Lohmar (132) were third. Jacob Lohmar (113) was fourth, and Wallin (120) took fifth.

Ridge and Valley Conference Duals

RIVER RIDGE — Ithaca-Weston took first place, with De Soto second and Pecatonica-Argyle third at the six-team conference dual held Jan. 28.

In the first team dual, Pec-Argyle defeated North Crawford/Seneca 60-12. Only four weights held matches, which were split via pin. Aidan Gruenenfelder (106) and Kristian Orloff (145) won by pin for the Vikings.

In the second match, Ithaca-Weston beat Pec-Argyle 51-27. This time there were just four forfeits, with both teams splitting the points. 

Six of the remaining 10 matches ended in pins where the Vikings were on the losing side. Sammy Nelson (138) and Jakob Orloff (113) both won by pin for Pec-Argyle. Kristian Orloff won the 152-match with an 8-3 score against Logan Anderson. At 120, Trevor Doescher fell in sudden victory overtime 14-12.

In the third match, De Soto beat the Vikings 39-36. Jakob Orloff (113), Trevor Doescher (120), Sammy Nelson (138), Lucas Rue (145) and Tayte Hirsch (170) all won via pin for Pec-Argyle.

Against River Ridge in the fourth match, the Vikings won 66-6, losing just won match via pinfall. Of the other six matches wrestled, Pec-Argyle won each by pin: Gruenenfelder (106), Ridge Toay (132), Rue (152), Hirsch (182), Levi Krebs (195) and Levi Paust (285).

Pec-Argyle won the fifth match over Kickapoo/La Farge 60-18.

Rue (152), Hirsch (170), Nelson (138) and Kristian Orloff (145) all won by pin.


Wisconsin Dells Invitational

WISCONSIN DELLS — Sugar River finished 11th out of 17 teams Jan. 29 at the Wisconsin Dells Invitational, with just six wrestlers competing. Brillion was the team champion.

Mason Mau was second at 126 pounds, while Carson Lowshaw (195) was third, Blake Endres (106) fourth and Brennan Keyes (120) fifth.


Lodi 59, Sugar River 13

LODI — The Raiders picked just two wins against Lodi Jan. 27.

At 106, Endres defeating Levi Ness, 2-1. Mau scored a 12-3 major decision at 126. Loshaw pinned Isaiah Groskopf at 195 moments before the end of the second period.

Sugar River forfeited six matches. Lodi scored just one pin, but won two matches by decision and another by tech fall.
