The Cardinals knocked off Janesville Craig in three sets, 25-14, 15-25, 15-7, then bounced Big Foot 25-17, 25-21 before squeaking by Altoona in a nail-biter 25-14, 23-25, 15-13. Brodhead then picked up wins over Edgerton (25-19, 25-20) and Deerfield (25-18, 25-13).

In the championship match, Lakeside Lutheran swept the Cardinals 15-10, 15-16, marking the only blemish on the day for Brodhead.

Daisy Nelson had 10 kills, Bailey Matthys completed 12 kills, Liz Green dished out 10 assists and Catherine Speckman finished with 53 digs. As a team, the Cardinals served 88.4% on the day with 36 aces and 39 service errors.

Sept. 19

Brodhead 3, Big Foot 0

WALWORTH — The Cardinals swept the Chiefs 25-15, 25-16, 25-19.

Siegel had 10 kills, three aces and eight digs, while Goecks had nine kills and three aces. Kammerer finished with 30 assists and 15 digs, and Dix had five kills and four blocks.

The Cardinals had eight aces and just three service errors in the match, finishing with a 95.9% service rate.

Milton 3, Monroe 0

MILTON — The Cheesemakers were swept out of the gym by the Red Hawks, 7-25, 22-25, 13-25.

“Let me preface by saying that the scores do not reflect how I felt we played against Milton,” Monroe head coach Heidi Witt said. “We had some really long rallies that just didn’t end up our way. We didn’t miss a single serve tonight and our serve receive was really good. Finding the open spots on Milton’s side of the court and a few miscommunications were our downfalls.”

Cassi Gersbach had seven kills to lead Monroe, which was led in assists by Lily Frehner with 15. Frehner also had two aces and 12 digs.

“Milton has a really strong and smooth setter who gave away nothing and ‘quietly’ snuck in a few tips on us,” Witt said. “The second set we were leading the entire time and thought we were going to take that one away from them but Milton managed to gain more momentum near the end with some timely hits.”

Alyse Maurer and Bri Seagreaves each had seven digs for Monroe, while Katie Hayes had three kills and two blocks. Gersbach added a block.

Monroe’s next match is Sept. 26 at home against Edgewood for Youth Night.

Barneveld 3, Albany 2

ALBANY — The Comets led in sets 2-1 before the Eagles came back to take the match.

“It was a very good match, both teams rallied well. It really came down to serving,” Albany coach Sydney Bump said.

Barneveld won the first set 25-14, but Albany took Games 2 and 3, 25-20, 25-16. Barneveld then won the fourth set 25-20 and, in the tie-breaking fifth game, the Eagles rolled to a 15-2 win.

“Albany was up the fourth game 17-13 and then we missed three serves in a row and then the score was 20-20 and Barneveld ended up winning the fourth game 25-20,” Bump said. “The fifth game Barneveld had the momentum and Albany struggled with their serves.”

Leah Marx led all hitters with 15 kills for Barneveld. Brianna Dahl had 14 kills for Albany, which also got seven kills from Jada Flannery. Dahl added four aces, 12 assists and five blocks. Kaitlyn Dunphy had seven aces and 12 assists on the night for the Comets, which also got 12 digs from Cindy Detra and 11 digs from Mady Conway.

Black Hawk 3, Juda 0

JUDA — The Warriors held onto the top spot in the Six Rivers East with a dominating sweep of the Panthers. Black Hawk won 25-12, 25-17, 25-7 Sept. 19.

“The first two matches were well played,” Juda coach Scott Anderson said. “There were two very long rallies in the first game, but again, you can only dig so many times. Black Hawk did extremely well passing and did a great job with serve receive.”

Bailey Butler had 11 kills and four aces to lead the Warriors, while Hannah Butler had two blocks and eight digs. Maddy Huschitt finished with three aces and 12 assists. Macie Stauffacher was a perfect 19 for 19 from the service line and added 11 assists.

“I was most impressed with Hannah Butler’s passing from the back row. In serve receive, she handled probably two-thirds of the court and really made every serve that Juda had be in-system,” Anderson said.

Juda was led by Jocelyn Rufer’s four kills. Triniti Elmer had two aces and 14 digs, while Montana Steinmann had 14 digs as well. Maddie Smith dished out six assists for the Panthers, and Cheyenne Noble had a block.

“On defense, Juda did a great job hitting, but their hitters were just too much for our defense, and our offense, while we were pushing them hard, they did a great job of keeping the ball in-system and on their hitters,” Anderson said.
