Argyle clutches up in win over Belleville
Brodhead drops DH; Pec, NG can’t overcome errors

BELLEVILLE — Seniors Kirsten Ostby and Jadyn Saalsaa came up clutch for the Orioles in a 14-2 nonconference win over Belleville April 26.

Ostby finished 2 for 4 with a pair of doubles and five RBIs, while Saalsaa was 3 for 4 with two doubles and four RBIs. Tori Lantz was also 3 for 4 at the plate with a double and three RBIs hitting behind Saalsaa.

Argyle scored two runs in the first inning and then added six more in the second to take a commanding 8-0 lead. The Orioles added another run in the third and five more in the fifth. Belleville score a run in each of the third and fifth innings.

Grace Ganshert got the win on the mound, allowing two unearned runs on three hits and a walk while striking out nine. The freshman hurler was 1 for 3 at the plate with a walk and four runs scored in the leadoff spot. Argyle collected nine doubles in the game. 

Maddy Weber was pegged for the loss on the mound, allowing eight earned runs on 15 hits and three walks. She struck out five batters.


Evansville 14, Brodhead 2

Evansville 10, Brodhead 6

BRODHEAD — The Blue Devils swept the Cardinals in a doubleheader April 26, taking advantage of nine total Brodhead errors in the twinbill.

In the 14-2 opener, Evansville scored three runs in the second, four in the third and one in the fourth to take a commanding 8-0 lead. The lid blew open in the top of the fifth as the Blue Devils tallied six runs. Evansville opened the inning with five straight hits. Laura Bettenhausen, the third batter of the inning, doubled home two runs. Hannah Karnes then tripled to score Bettenhausen. Two pitches later, Braly Wiser smacked a two-run home run to center.

Brodhead plated two runners in the bottom of the fifth inning, with Katie Goecks hitting a 2-RBI single to bring home Madisyn Kail and Bailey Matthys. Goecks finished the game 2 for 3 with a double.

Kail took the loss on the mound, allowing 13 earned runs on 17 hits and two walks. She struck out three. 

In the second game, Brodhead scored two runs in the top of the first inning, but Evansville tied it in the second and led 8-2 by the end of the fourth. Brodhead scored another run in the fifth, and tailing 10-3 in the seventh tallied three more runs before the game ended.

Hannah Myhre was 3 for 4 for the Cardinals in Game 2, while Matthys was 2 for 4 with two runs. Goecks finished 1 for 4 with two runs and an RBI, while Nataley Bump had a pair of hits.

Bump took the loss in the pitcher’s circle, allowing seven earned runs on 12 hits and two walks. She struck out one batter and hit another.


Fennimore 13, Pecatonica 5

BLANCHARDVILLE — Joselyn White had three hits and Lily Busser added two more, but the Vikings lost to the Eagles in a nonconference game April 26. Sam Ihm was 2 for 3 with a double.

Pecatonica snagged a 1-0 lead after the first inning, but Fennimore plated three runs in the second and two in the third to go up 5-1. The Vikings scored a run in the bottom of the third to make it a 3-run game, but Fennimore plated three in the fifth and four more in the top of the seventh for insurance. Pecatonica could only muster three more runs in the bottom of the fifth.

The Vikings had six errors and struck out 14 times on defense.

Lexi McSherry was charged with the loss on the mound, allowing 13 runs (just 3 earned) on nine hits and four walks in seven innings.


Highland 14, Pecatonica 3

HIGHLAND — The Vikings gave up a 9-spot in the third inning and committed seven errors in the nonconference loss April 25.

Loomis had two hits and two runs, while White was 2 for 3 with two RBIs. Ihm and Loomis both doubled.

McSherry pitched the first three innings, allowing 11 runs (2 earned) on six hits and four walks with three strikeouts. Tessa Green pitched the bottom of the fourth, giving up three unearned runs on three walks. She also struck out a batter. Both Vikings pitchers hit a batter as well.


Wisconsin Heights 14, New Glarus 0

NEW GLARUS — The Vanguards scored 10 runs in the top of the fifth inning to pull away from the Knights April 25.

With a 4-0 lead after the fourth inning, Wisconsin Heights took advantage of some New Glarus defensive miscues. After an error allowed the leadoff batter to reach in the top of the fifth, the Vanguards worked a walk and then a bunt-double to third. Four straight singles helped Wisconsin Heights take a 9-0 advantage before the first out of the inning. With two outs, the Vanguards had six straight batters reach, pushing the lead to 14-0. Heights sent 14 batters to the frame in the inning.

Faith Bump and Zoe Moen had the only hits for New Glarus. Bump, Shealyn Klosterman-Havens and Chloe Kramer each worked walks.

Maci Carney took the loss on the mound, allowing eight runs (four earned) in four-plus innings. She struck out two batters and allowed six hits and 10 walks. Klosterman-Havens came on in relief in the fifth, pitching to a full frame of work with seven hits and a walk allowed, as well as six earned runs.


Cuba City 8, Darlington 2

DARLINGTON — Brittney Jacobson had two hits, a run and an RBI, but the Redbirds couldn’t overcome an 8-0 deficit during their loss to Cuba City in a SWAL game April 25.

The Cubans scored two runs in the first and led 5-0 through five innings. A three-run sixth made it 8-0. Darlington scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth, but the game hole proved to be too large.

Alyssa Tuescher took the loss on the mound, going 5.2 innings, allowing five runs on 10 hits and six walks with three strikeouts. Kaylyn McGuire came on in relief and gave up three runs in 1.1 innings on three hits, two walks and a strikeout.
