Basketball hot

MONROE — Eight local basketball players will represent their schools at the 2021 Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association All-Star Games July 14-15 at JustAGame Fieldhouse in Wisconsin Dells.

The games are played by top seniors around the state by invite-only.

In Division 2, Monroe will be represented by Cade Meyer in the boys game, and Megan Benzschawel on the girls side. Both players reached the 1,000-point career milestone this season and led their squads in scoring. Meyer was also recently named third-team all-state by the Associated Press. Junior teammate Carson Leuzinger was honorable mention AP all-state.

In Division 4, Darlington’s Carter Lancaster and Cayden Rankin will play in the boys game. The two players helped lead the Redbirds to the sectional semifinal this season, and Lancaster was a high-honorable mention AP all-state pick. The teammates will be split in the all-star game, however, with Rankin representing the White team, and Lancaster the Red. On the girls side, Jaylynn Benson, the all-time leading scorer in New Glarus program history, was selected.

In Division 5, Black Hawk’s Bailey Butler and Kaylee Marty will represent the Warriors. Butler was named Miss Basketball earlier this month as the state’s top senior. Marty was the team’s No. 2 in scoring. Black Hawk went undefeated in the regular season and lost in the state semifinal to Three Lakes. On the boys side, Monticello’s Peter Gustafson will play one last time before college. Gustafson was the Ponies’ leading scorer and finished his career in the top 10 all-time in school scoring history. He was also an honorable mention AP all-state pick.
