MONROE - Ciara Kaderly surprised herself in her first cross country season. She knocked at the door for a state berth, but came up just short Saturday, Oct. 26 at Twining Park.
Kaderly, a Monroe freshman, finished the 4,000-meter race in 15th place with a time of 16 minutes, 21.2 seconds, 15 seconds and four spots away from qualifying for state.
"It's very shocking to me," Kaderly said. "I didn't really think I had a chance. I just hoped for the best. I just wanted to run. It's the last race of the year and I wanted to break 16 minutes."
Kaderly enjoyed running in front of a big home crowd.
"It meant a lot," she said. "It was very inspiring. It made me want to run faster."
Madison Edgewood ran away with the sectional title (38 points) led by sophomore Amy Davis, who was the sectional champion with a time of 14:46.8. Davis was the state runner-up last year as a freshman. The Crusaders had four of the top 10 runners.
The other state qualifying team was sectional runner-up Dodgeville-Mineral Point (63) which finished well ahead of Mount Horeb (96). Monroe finished seventh (184), New Glarus-Monticello took 10th (278) and Brodhead-Juda was 11th (278) at the 14-team meet.
Monroe sophomore Kayla Einbeck took 24th place (16:50) and freshman Josie Eberle was 43rd (17:35.8). Freshman Jordan Hirsbrunner finished 44th (17:37) and senior Therese Hughes was 58th (17:59.4). Four of the Cheesemakers top six runners were freshmen. Several runners were battling illness last week, including Hirsbrunner.
"Considering how sick they were and the condition we were in, I'm happy," Monroe coach Dave Hirsbrunner said of the top half seventh-place finish. "It's like a swimmer without arms and legs. You can play basketball with the flu, but you can't run 4,000 to 5,000-meters with the flu."
New Glarus-Monticello junior Bri Roska finished 16th (16:26.2) and was within 20 seconds of qualifying for state. The Knights' 17-year streak of qualifying an individual or team for state was snapped.
"She dropped over 1 minute over last year's time when she first came to Monroe and dropped more than 20 seconds during the season," New Glarus-Monticello coach Steve Wehrley said of Roska. "I think she has a lot more potential. We knew she had an outside shot because the competition was vicious. She improved substantially. We are betting on her starting a new streak next year."
Brodhead-Juda had two runners in the top 41, led by sophomore Taylor Bluemel who took 20th (16:46.3) and senior Taylor Covert (17:33.9).
