LA CROSSE - Four Monroe wrestlers are still in contention for medals at the Bi-State wrestling tournament Saturday.
Both Monroe seniors Sam Kind at 170 pounds and Dempzy Foley at 182 went 3-1 and assured themselves medals in today's second day of the two-day tournament.
After a first-round bye, Kind (19-2) defeated Lakesville South's Brendon Bischof 11-2. He then defeated Lodi's Max Barreau 6-3. In a quarterfinal match, River Valley's Shane Liegel knocked off Kind 11-3.
Foley (20-1) lost his first match of the season in his first 6-minute match in the quarterfinals, falling to Kelby O'Rielly of Goodhue, Minnesota, 8-2. Foley had three pins Friday to push his season total to 15 pins. Foley pinned Baraboo's Ben Florencio in 2 minutes, 37 seconds. He then pinned both Prairie du Chien's Zach Swiggum and Belmont-Platteville's Riley Christenson in 1:57 each.
"We really expected more than that," Monroe coach Tom Witt said of wrestlers who would guarantee themselves medals after the first day of the Bi-State Classic. "We were really close in some other matches. We still have four who can win five matches and take third place."
The two other Cheesemaker wrestlers still alive are sophomore Bodie Minder (220) and senior Tyson Welsch (heavyweight). If Minder and Welsch both win wrestleback matches today they would assure themselves of a top 12 medal.
After winning a first-round match on a forfeit, Minder (15-2) pinned Lancaster's Cole Zenz in 3:28. Ryan Schoenfelder of Goodhue, Minnesota, pinned Minder in 3:49 in the third round. In a wrestleback, Minder beat Joseph Schick 4-3.
Jesse Jackson of Kenyon-Wanamingo slipped past Welsch 5-3. In a wrestleback match, Welsch pinned Muskego's Nate Stewart in 1:52.
Monroe sophomore Alex Witt (145) wrestled his first matches of the year after coming back from a broken finger. Witt went 3-2, but lost a wrestleback match. He defeated Medford Area's Cody Church in sudden death 4-3. Seth Brossard of Kenyon-Wanamingo, the No. 3 seed, defeated Witt 9-2. Witt bounced back to knock off Adams Friendship's Josh Wallner 10-4. In a wrestleback, New Lisbon's Isaac LaBudda edged Witt 5-4.
"There were a couple of situations where Alex was close to turning him," Tom Witt said of the match against Brossard. For the first time out, he wrestled really well. He's banged up. He will be really sore tomorrow."
Senior teammate Travis Wolf (16-6) at 152 went 2-2. After a first-round bye, Wolf defeated Waunakee's Colton Grindle 7-3. Muskego's Evan Sinda then edged Wolf 3-1. In a wrestleback match, Joe Jeans of Bloomington-Kennedy-Jefferson pinned Wolf in 2:07.
