MONROE - Every swimmer works on finishing off races and beating opponents to the wall.
For Monroe junior Angie Beaver, her work paid off Tuesday night as she won the 100-meter backstroke with a time of 1 minute, 16.34 seconds, which was one hundredth of a second ahead of Milton's Abby Schmitt.
"I knew I had to go get her," Beaver said. "My adrenaline skyrocketed. The only thing I could think of is if I won, Linda (Moser) would be so proud of me. I knew I had to do everything Linda taught me, kicking and reaching."
Oregon defeated Monroe 102-67 in a dual meet at the Green County YMCA, but the Cheesemakers turned in several highlights in the pool. Monroe senior Rachel Root won the 100 butterfly (1:09.82) and the 200 individual medley (2:31.55). Root and Beaver teamed with Sarah Kind and Briana Katzenberger to win the 200 medley relay with a time of 2:16.11, which was about one second ahead of the Panthers.
Monroe coach Linda Moser was excited to have several tight races in the dual meet against the Panthers.
"It's nice to have a meet when you know you can be competitive," Moser said. "This is one you know you can stick in it. It's a whole different feeling for the girls in the water. The atmosphere is different."
Root swam an amazing anchor in the 400 freestyle relay and almost came back to beat Oregon. She teamed with Katzenberger, Beaver and Kind to take second place, which was seven hundredths of a second behind the Panthers.
"I knew I had to kick her down," Root said. "She just out-touched me at the end. I have to work on my flip turns."
Root, who has been to state three straight years, said she plans to swim the 100 backstroke at the end of the season. She's still debating whether to swim the butterfly or 200 IM. Root finished seventh at state last year in the backstroke and set the school record.
"For sure, I will swim the backstroke," she said. "That is my best event. In the 200 IM, I have to work on my transitions."
Katzenberger took second in the 50 freestyle (30.52) and the Cheesemakers' 200 freestyle relay team of Anna Meritt, Amanda Putz, Mackenzie Hesgard and Corlissa Robertson finished second (2:15.96).
Moser was encouraged by Beaver's performance in the backstroke.
"She needed that win," Moser said. "Angie has struggled this year with her confidence. The win will give her the confidence she needs to get over the plateau she is at. I knew it would be neck and neck, and I knew Angie could pull it out."
