BRODHEAD - With three returning golfers, the Brodhead boys golf team is looking to make a jump up in the Rock Valley South Conference this season.
Brodhead finished sixth in the conference last year, but third-year coach Eric Oliver has expectations for a young team to make a turnaround.
"We want to work hard, play smart and improve our standing in the Rock Valley South," Oliver said.
The three returning golfers for the Cardinals are sophomore Derrick Oborne, junior Presley Hale and junior Megan Olson. Olson is on the boys golf team because the Cardinals don't have a girls golf team.
Two newcomers looking to make an immediate impact for the Cardinals are Parker Johnson and Eric Oliver.
Oliver said one of the strengths of the Cardinals this year is the competition for the fourth and fifth spots.
There is a chance the Cardinals will not have a senior in its top five golfers on the varsity. It could lead to some challenges early on.
"Inexperience in difficult situations and conditions," Oliver said are the team's biggest challenges.
Oliver said Palmyra-Eagle is the favorite to win the Rock Valley South this season because of the returning golfers they have.
