Cardinals take opener

BRODHEAD - The Brodhead girls basketball team made good use of several trips to the foul line, and the Cardinals defeated Parkview 61-51 in their season opener.

The Cardinals shot 37 times from the free throw line, making 24 (a 65 percent success rate). Four Brodhead players scored in double figures.

Senior Taylor Douglas led the way for the Cardinals with 14 points. Junior Carly Mohns added 12 points, and seniors Mariah Ahrens and Brianna Hicks chipped in 10 points apiece.

Brodhead coach Brad Pickett said his team simply followed the usual game plan of attacking inside.

"We want to get to the basket," he said. "Obviously when you get to the basket you're either going make a layup or get fouled. We stress attacking the basket, and the girls did a good job of that."

Junior Jordan Halvorson added five points off the bench, and Pickett was happy to see her and the others spread out the scoring.

"We talk about balance," Pickett said. "Douglas and Mohns are obviously two of our better scorers, but it's nice to have an Ahrens or Hicks. (Jordan) came in and gave us a nice spark too."

The Cardinals (1-0) will travel to play Clinton on Friday.

Potosi 52, Pecatonica 38

BLANCHARDVILLE - Pecatonica took on Potosi Tuesday night, and came up short, losing 52-38.

Pecatonica coach Matt Bakkum said that, while Potosi is a good team, he believes his team could have pulled off the upset.

"I think in a lot of ways we beat ourselves," Bakkum said. "We had too many turnovers. We would play 10 solid defensive possessions, let our guard down on the 11th, and that's where they would take advantage.

"Potosi's always good, always tough, but if we tighten up a few aspects I think it could have been a different result tonight."

Senior Lizzy Britt led the Vikings with 10 points, and seven other players scored for Pecatonica. Bakkum was glad to see a number of girls score but said he needs a few players to step up and take on a greater role.

"I would like to see one or two girls take the initiative to be the scorer," Bakkum said. "It doesn't have to be the same people every night, but we need to see two or three girls score in double digits every night. It can't just be one person."

Pecatonica fell to 0-2 with the loss.

New Glarus 50, Luther Prep 40

NEW GLARUS - The New Glarus girls basketball team clicked Tuesday night, and the Glarner Knights defeated Luther Prep 50-40 at home.

Junior Mandi Sargent scored a team-high and career-high 14 points in the win, and junior Sierra Watrud added 11.

New Glarus coach Megan Scheele said a solid start on defense and good vision on offense were the keys to the team's success.

"We started real strong. We usually start slow and (then) our second half is better," Scheele said. "We started strong and got them on the press right away, and we finally boxed out. We had really good vision tonight. Little things made a big difference."

Scheele said the improved vision on the court allowed for a flow, and "the girls got to play."

The prime beneficiary was Sargent and her career-high 14, but Scheele said everyone got in on the action.

"Mandi got (the ball) to people and got it as well," she said. "It was not just one person. She had an all-around nice game."

The Knights (2-1) will travel to take on Evansville on Monday.

Darlington 45, Belmont 16

DARLINGTON - The Darlington girls basketball team hosted Belmont Tuesday night, and came out on top, 45-16.

Darlington coach Riley Fitzsimons said the key for his team was putting pressure on the ball.

"Belmont's a young team. We were able to put pressure on their young players and cause a lot of turnovers," Fitzsimons said.

Senior Cassidy Chambers led the Redbirds with 12 points. Claire Scott added 9 points, while Tatum Evenstad contributed 8.

Fitzsimons said he was happy with the play of Evenstad, the Redbirds' senior point guard.

"Evenstad played a very good game for us. She handled the ball well and played good pressure defense."

Darlington (2-0) will travel to Cuba City Friday night for a clash with the Cubans.
