STOUGHTON - Monona Grove won the Badger South Conference track meet Tuesday, but the Cheesemakers earned a co-championship with the Silver Eagles by virtue of their unbeaten dual conference season.
Monona Grove outdistanced Monroe 153.5-130 2/3 to win the conference meet. The Cheesemakers entered the Badger South meet with their second straight 6-0 conference season, which helped them repeat as Badger South Conference champions. The conference title marks the Cheesemakers' 20th conference championship.
"Our main goal was to win the conference meet, but our secondary goal was to do no worse than second," Monroe coach Dave Hirsbrunner said.
Monroe junior Jeffrey Hill, who cleared 14-feet to set a conference record in the pole vault last year, won his second straight conference championship in that event. This year, Hill cleared 13-0.
Monroe senior Alex Bartlett won the 200 with his fastest time of the year (:23.4). He battled back from leg pain, Hirsbrunner said.
The Cheesemakers' 1,600 relay team of Matt Bush, Lucas Goetz, Skyler Stingley and Dylan Starck took first with a season best time of 3:31.7.
Monroe's 3,200 relay team of Luke Peterson, Bush, Stingley and Starck won a conference title with a season best time of 8:14.7.
Monroe senior Mason Goff finished second in the 100 (:11.61). Starck added a second place in the 800 (2:01.72) and junior Caleb Ahrens finished second in the 300 hurdles (:42.28).
