VERONA - Monroe junior Kyle Bruce battled the heat and wind on his way to shooting an 81 and tying for 14th place during the first round of the WIAA Division 2 state tournament at University Ridge Monday.
Bruce is tied with Plymouth's Garrett Beger, University School's Andrew Hattersly and Madison Edgewood's Gage Mauer for 14th place.
Bruce started on the back nine and shot a 6-over-par 42. He double bogeyed No. 14 and triple-bogeyed No. 18. His second shot on No. 14 went into a deep bunker. His second shot on No. 18 also found its way into a deep bunker. Bruce finished with two of his three birdies on the back nine. He rebounded and shot a 3-over par-39 on the font nine.
Bruce had a bogey and a birdie through the first seven holes on the front nine. He was looking to break 80 when a wayward tee ball on No. 8 cost him a double bogey.
Bruce looks to get into the top 10 today when he tees off at 7:18 a.m.
