BRODHEAD - Senior Erika Stampfli took a shutout into the seventh inning and struck out 17 batters to lead the 10th-ranked Brodhead Cardinals to a 3-1 win over the No. 2 seeded Cuba City Cubans and a Division 3 regional championship.

Brodhead, the No. 1 seed, got the first run of the game in the third inning on consecutive base hits by senior Tia Collins, sophomore Amanda Pickel, and senior Mariah Mohns. Brodhead took a 2-0 lead in the fifth inning after two were out when Mohns belted a triple and scored on error by Cuba City shortstop Emily des Jarlais. In the sixth, the Cardinals got an insurance run as Shianne Strommen singled and later scored.

Cuba City, (18-4) ranked No. 13 in Division 3, didn't get their first hit until the fifth inning and were shut out until Miranda Richard singled and scored on Jodie Belkin's triple with two outs in the seventh inning. After issuing a pair of walks in the first inning, Stampfli retired 10 batters in a row, eight of them by strikeout. Stampfli allowed five hits and four walks in helping the Cardinals improve to 20-4.

Brodhead advances to the Division 3 sectional semifinal where it will host No. 1 ranked Poynette (24-1) Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. Last year, Brodhead reached the sectional semifinal in Division 2 and lost to Fort Atkinson 9-8.
