ITHACA - Black Hawk senior quarterback Heath Butler scored two touchdowns to help the Warriors stun No. 1 ranked Ithaca 16-0 Friday in a WIAA Division 7 Level 2 playoff game.
"To shut out a team that has been averaging 60 points per game is really an incredible effort by our kids," Black Hawk coach Cory Milz said. "I'm really proud of them. It's a great win for our kids on the road."
Black Hawk (8-3), the defending WIAA Division 7 state champions, were locked in a scoreless game at halftime against the Bulldogs. Butler hooked up with Brian Sisler on a 5-yard TD pass with 33.4 seconds left in the third quarter. Butler then ran in the two-point conversion to give the Warriors an 8-0 lead.
Black Hawk's Ryan Quinn came up with a sack for a safety with 3 minutes, 27 seconds to go in the fourth quarter to give the Warriors a 10-0 lead. Butler added a 10-yard TD run with 1:23 left to seal the win.
Butler completed 11 of 17 passes for 86 yards with one touchdown. Black Hawk senior Shawn Woodruff rushed for 99 yards on 19 carries. Jacob Quinn rushed for 82 yards on 15 carries.
"Everyone talks about Ithaca's offense because they led the state in scoring at 60 points per game," Milz said. "Their defense is physical. They were keying on him (Woodruff). Jacob did a good job of running in between the tackles."
Black Hawk advances to the Division 7 state quarterfinals where they will play the winner of Potosi and Burlington Catholic Central. Catholic Central plays at Potosi today.
"We are happy to continue playing," Milz said. "Our kids' mantra is who is next.
"From my standpoint, I would like to see BCC. We haven't beat them (Catholic Central) since 2001. I would like to get a crack at them. Potosi is a shorter drive. Toss them in a hat and pick one out and that is who we get."
