Black Hawk stuns Monticello in 4 sets

SOUTH WAYNE - The Black Hawk Warriors handed the Monticello Ponies their first conference loss of the season, 30-28, 17-25, 25-21, 25-23 Tuesday in Six Rivers East Conference play.

Sophomore Jen Wellnitz hammered down 17 kills and senior Chaesta Shager added 14 kills and 15 assists to power the Warriors. Senior Katie Quinn had seven blocks and junior Abby Schiferl dropped in a pair of aces along with seven digs for Black Hawk.

Monticello had not lost a conference match since a loss to Barneveld on October 14, 2010, to close out the regular season last year. The Ponies were led by sophomore Marissa Berg with 12 kills and junior Jordan Kubly with 11 kills. Senior C.J. Dilley had 27 assists and 10 digs for Monticello.

Black Hawk (5-5, 5-3 Six Rivers East) will travel to Pecatonica while Monticello (10-3, 8-1 Six Rivers East) goes to Juda Thursday.

Albany 3,

Barneveld 2

BARNEVELD - On the brink of losing match point in a pivotal fourth set, the Albany Comets rallied to force extended play, then won the fifth set to take a 19-25, 25-19, 20-25, 31-29, 15-9 win over the Barneveld Eagles in a Six Rivers East volleyball match Tuesday.

The Comets trailed 24-18 in the fourth set and, facing match point, pulled to within 24-22 on three straight service points behind senior Katie Krupke and a side-out point. After a Barneveld time out, Krupke added two more service points and an ace to put the Comets ahead 25-24 and force extended play.

With Albany keading 30-29, the return on junior Julia Farley's serve went out of bounds giving the Comets the win. In the fifth set, the score was tied 4-4 before Albany took control with an 11-5 closeout and win of the match.

The Comets were led by senior Jordan Neuenschwander's 10 kills and three blocks. Junior Cassidy Bump added nine assists and eight kills and Krupke contributed eight assists for Albany.

Albany (3-7 Six Rivers East) will travel to conference leader Monticello Tuesday.

Fennimore 3, Darlington 0

DARLINGTON - The Fennimore Golden Eagles swept all three sets in defeating the Darlington Redbirds, 25-15, 25-13, 25-8 in SWAL Conference volleyball Tuesday.

Darlington was led by senior Laura Steiner with four kills and six blocks. Senior Emily Salathe had 17 digs and junior Cassidy Chambers had four assists for the Redbirds.

Darlington (7-11, 2-6 SWAL) will travel to Riverdale Thursday.

Argyle 3, Juda 0

ARGYLE - The Argyle Orioles maintained their hold on second place in the Six Rivers East with a 25-18, 25-23, 25-22 victory over the Juda Panthers Tuesday.

The turning point of the match happened in the second set with the Orioles trailing 18-9. Argyle's Micala Peterson came up with four service points including two aces.

"We recently haven't been playing as sharp as we would like to," Argyle head coach Shane Johnson said. "That closed the gap a little bit. As a group and team, we finally found that urgency."

The Orioles continued their comeback late in the second set when they trailed 23-20. Senior Abby Flanagan rattled off five straight service points including two aces, and Peterson closed it out with a kill to give the Orioles the win.

"They (Peterson and Flanagan) showed some good leadership," said Johnson. "They both stepped up."

Flanagan ended the night with eight kills and Peterson had eight aces for the Orioles. Junior Kayla Ostby was also a huge contributor for Argyle with 23 assists and 11 digs. Senior Danielle Treuthardt added three blocks.

Juda was led by senior C.J. Dunwiddie with six kills and six digs. Senior Morgan Kamholz was the Panthers' assist leader with 13.

Argyle (13-5 8-2 Six Rivers East) will host Barneveld Thursday. Juda (3-9, 3-6 Six Rivers East) will host Monticello Thursday.

Cambridge 3,

New Glarus 1

NEW GLARUS - The New Glarus Glarner Knights looked like they were on their way to a win over Cambridge with a victory in the first set, but the Bluejays grabbed the momentum back right after that by winning the next three sets and defeated the Knights, 23-25, 25-22, 25-23, 25-11 Tuesday in a Capitol South Conference match.

Senior Jenna Romich had 13 kills and four blocks for the Knights while senior Alaina Legler delivered 21 assists. Senior Maci Watrud tracked down 12 digs and senior Heather Hustad served up three aces for New Glarus.

New Glarus (2-14, 1-6 Capitol South) will compete in the Darlington Tournament Saturday before resuming conference action at home against Marshall on Tuesday.
