SOUTH WAYNE - Senior Sammy Lovelace went 2-for-4 and scored three runs to propel the Black Hawk softball team to an 8-6 win over New Glarus on Tuesday in a chilly season opener.
Black Hawk broke the game open with a six-run third inning. Black Hawk sophomore Mia Jackson went 2-for-3 with two RBI and one double, and junior Cheyenne Stewart was 2-for-4.
"We hit the ball pretty good right out of the gate," Black Hawk coach Jim Baumgartner said. "For the first game we only had one error. We have only been outside once for practice. To come out here and to win the first game is huge."
Black Hawk freshman Hannah Butler pitched a complete game to get the win. She gave up one earned run on four hits. She struck out eight and walked eight. Butler also had a team-high three RBI.
"Hannah did a really good job," Baumgartner said. "It's definitely a confidence booster for her."
The Knights rallied with a four-run fifth inning. Butler walked three in the inning.
New Glarus junior Riley Parker pitched a complete game. She gave up eight runs on 11 hits. She struck out four and walked three.
New Glarus senior Maya Kramer went 2-for-3 with a double to lead the Knights.
